Exclamation Are these possible symptoms of GERD/LPR and oral thrush?

Okay so I have been experiencing the single worst pains I have ever experianed over the last 2 1/2 months. It started out as a single pain on the lower left side of my throat when I would smoke, then after a couple weeks it became more intense and moved onto my outer neck and ear. From there it started to hurt the back of my neck (lower part of the back of my head), and now I am also experiencing headaches and sinus pressure.

I have also been experiencing these weird "attacks" where I get a sharp pain in my left ear (and in one instance my left eye) followed by a 10 minute (or so) period of dizziness and mild confusion, shortly after that my hands will start to shake and I will feel like I am about to faint, and when I sit down I get really cold and start to shake while my heart starts beating rapidly. I can usually make this stop by going to sleep/ getting under a warm blanket and slowing my breathing.

I have been to the Emergency Room 3 times and they think I am just having panic attacks, while I went to urgent care once and they just gave me a prescription for Tylenol 3 for the pains in my neck. My doctor referred me to an ENT and the only thing she could find was evidence of was Heartburn and Thrush in my mouth. No evidence of anything wrong with my ears or sinuses though.

I have had a CT of my head and of my neck along with an X-ray of my chest, along with tests for everything from white blood cell counts, to mono, to strep, to HIV, and many other tests and everything comes back normal or negitive for anything. I have no fever, no weight loss, no fatigue, no anything-sickness-like, just LOTS AND LOTS OF PAIN, and it's only getting worse every day.

Please I am so scared and have no idea what this could be, I can't find anything on the Internet matching my symptoms and no doctors have been able to find anything substantial, other than being diagnosed with GERD, Thrush, and Anxiety/Depression. I seriously doubt that any of these have been causing my headaches or "attacks" as I've had anxiety attacks before and they are NOTHING compared to the "attacks" I have been experiencing. Please if ANYONE has any idea of what this could be please tell me! This has been a living hell for me and I just want it to end.

Please note I have quit smoking 2 weeks ago and have started on Nocorette gum.
I am on the brink of a nervous breakdown from the anxiety of all this.

Re: Are these possible symptoms of GERD/LPR and oral thrush?

I am sorry that you are dealing with so many symptoms. You do not say how you were diagnosed with gerd based on any testing and I am not sure what you are doing for the gerd. I can only suggest what helped me with my gerd, LPR and thrush.

I got thrush from using steroid nose spray. I got it in my mouth and all the way down my esophagus. I got medication for that and I started taking probiotics. Also, thrush likes sugar and breads and I limited my diet of those products. I also limited dairy products.

For the LPR and gerd, I elevated my headboard about 6 inches with blocks of wood because my worst reflux was at night. If you are more bothered during the day, I found chewing sugarless gum to help because swallowing helped keep me from refluxing. I used a gum without sorbitol from Whole Foods..... and no mint flavor since mint aggravates reflux.

I do not know what medicines you are using for gerd. I used Protonix (prescription) and Zantac (ranitidine) at night. If you want to avoid the strong meds, try tsking DGL Licorice before meals. Also, aloe vera juice (no citrus) helped. The prescription drugs can cause rebound symptoms when you go off of them, but some people need to take those meds for a short period of time to let tissues heal.

I ate a very restrictive diet to reduce reflux. I avoided chocolate, fatty and fried foods, caffeine including coffee, tea and soft drinks; citrus fruits and any foods with tomatoes or tomato sauce, no spicy foods. I ate oatmeal, baked chicken, fish, most cooked vegetables like carrots, squash and jasmine rice and vety little bread. I ate this daily for 2-3 weeks to get everything to heal. Even though apples and bananas are low acid foods, I could not eat them because they caused reflux. I also drank alkaline water with a ph of 8.8 since it neutralizes pepsin from acid reflux. Pepsin is what usually causes the tissue damage and regular water just has a ph of 7. I used a saline nose spray bottle and put alkaline water in it and sprayed it up my nose to make my sinuses and throat feel better. I would reflux up to my sinuses at night and my elevatef headboard helped. I also took carafate suspension (prescription) 4 times a day to help my esophagus, stomach and intestines heal.

Lastly, my ENT thought I had developed some neuropathy in my throat which was causing the pain and he prescribed a mild antidepressant called Elavil. I only took 10 mg. per day because a highet dose made me sleepy and have a dry mouth, but it did help for the 6 weeks that I took it.

I would suggest that you slso stop smoking pot since it is not filtered snd can cause burning of already sensitive tissues. I do know that these symptoms cause a lot of anxiety, but if you will take steps each day to get better, you will start to improve. I found that when I took charge and stopped being the victim of the symptoms that I got better. If you do not improve in a few weeks, you may want to get additional testing such as a barium swallow test and endoscopy with ph monitoring to see how much you are refluxing. Please know that I care.

Re: Are these possible symptoms of GERD/LPR and oral thrush?

Wow that is a lot of changes that I will have to make to get all of this stuff under control. Yet again still noting seems to be explaining these "attacks" I have been getting and like I said they are far to painful to be anxiety (I thought my ear drum had busted open last night in a dream I had and there was blood everywhere, thank god I woke up and there was at least no blood, just discharge!) I have only smoked pot on 2 occasions sense I "quit" and that has been just one hit each time (one time for my anxiety and another to counteract some withdrawal I have been having from my pain killers I have been taking).

My ENT had stuck a camera looking thing down my nose and looked at my throat through a scope ( although I'm not sure what it is called) so I'm fairly confident in her diagnosis.

I am currently taking Nystatin 1 tablespoon 4x a day for 2 weeks for my thrush (which developed from an asthma steroid I had been improperly taking (I didn't know I had to rinse!) and 40 MG of Omeprazile once a day right before diner. I've been doing this for only 2 days now so I don't see much of a difference yet, however I had like a quarter of a beer yesterday and immediately felt the extreme pain in my throat after, but I don't seem to actually get a "heart burn" like most people.

Could this pain be contributed to possibly years of unknown heartburn without me knowing it? My doctor only told me that I "Had a lot of heart burn" but that's as far as I know about the extent of the damage. How long did it take for your symptoms to get better? I'm almost out of pain killers, but really only use them to get through work and am seeing my doctor on Tuesday to see if I can get some more until I heal if this is the case, as life has been MISERABLE for the last 2 1/2 months and I seriously don't think I could even work without them at this point. But how long should I expect the pain to be there for? I won't ask my doctor for more if the pain is going to subside with this treatment as I'm not trying to get hooked on any other drugs after my 3 year struggle with smoking.

I'll def try to prop my head up tonight and see if that helps and I'll take a tums right now before I go to bed and see if THAT helps. As for the diet changes, I guess it's time for me to grow up and start taking care of my body, right? Hell it has to happen sooner or later I guess...
