    Question GERD or Achalasia

How do you know if it's GERD or Achalasia? After 10 years of thinking it was GERD am now told it's Achalasia.

Gerd is caused by your lower esophageal sphincter relaxing too much, causing bile to reflux into the esophagus. From a quick search, it looks like Achalasia is the opposite, the LES isn't opening properly so your food isn't entering the stomach properly in the first place.

    Re: GERD or Achalasia

MY daughter has just been diagnosed with achalasia. It's taken 5 years to figure this out. It all started with chest pains. Then she started regurgitating in her sleep. She has difficulty getting certain foods down. She has suffered multiple tests and other diagnoses and finally after her 5th endoscopy the doctor told us she has achalasia. She has suffered for far too long. It was the swallowing study that confirmed it. She is scheduled for surgery February 12th. WE are hoping she can have the P.O.E.M procedure which is less invasive than the heller myotomy with dor fundoplication. We are currently waiting to hear from the insurance company.
