Question I'm so confused when it comes to Gerd.

I'm a 21 year old female & I've been put Ranitidine 150mg. I'm not sure if thats a PPI or not? I take it once in the morning & again at night. I have a heavy chest, and a bad taste in my mouth sometimes. Also I get the feeling of a lump in throat, kinda like when you're trying not to cry. I went to my Dr & she told me that I have GERD. I've changed my diet to all low acid foods & drinks as well as taking my meds. Anybody find anything that helps with heaviness in the chest? I've been on my meds for 2 weeks & while I'm not throwing up or having nausea all the time anymore I still don't feel at my best since I still have the heaviness & the lumpy feeling in my throat. I'm going to request that I see someone to get an endoscopy when I see my dr later this week because everywhere I look I see thats the only way to know for sure. I am nervous about it though. How was everyone else's experience with it? Also I'm trying to quit smoking. Does anyone have any tips on quitting? I could really use them. Its a little harder for me though because both my father & husband smoke as well. My husband will try to quit with me but my father will continue to smoke. I also have a 15 month old son whom I care for 6 days a week from 8am until almost 7 pm. Anybody have any tips for getting through the day? I've been looking for dinner recipes too, Anyone have some? Any & all help will be extremely appreciated.

The drug you are taking is a Histamine 2 Blocker or H2Blocker not a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI). PPIs are stronger and you may want to try one of those for a short period of time until you get better. These drugs include Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid and Zegerid and all of their generics.

Also 2 weeks on meds is not very long
Ranitidine didn't help me, so maybe you do need to try a PPI
If you do once things settle down try to get to the lowest dose possible, as they have side effects of hindering uptake of vitamins and minerals
Never come off them cold turkey though as rebound acid reflux is not pleasant. Wean down slowly
I weaned off mine but have had to go back on them, which I'm not happy about
Gaviscon Double Action liquid is good

    Self help
Raise the head of your bed on 6" blocks
No large meals, and none within 3-4 hours of bedtime
Sleeping on left side is better than right
    No tight clothes
    Lose weight if appropriate

    Common food triggers
    Chocolate
    Mints
    Coffee
    Fizzy drinks
    Alcohol
    Fatty/oily foods
    Spicy foods
    Tomato based meals
    Onions
    Citrus
    Vinegar

    Keep a food diary
I now can't eat fruit cake or raw salad/veg

Cutting down/stopping smoking can only be good for you
    I don't smoke, so can't help there

Thank you. Do you have any tips on what to eat for dinner?

Thank you. I'm worried about getting on a PPI because I've heard about a lot of people having problems because of them. I've been searching for a natural way to deal w/ Gerd but haven't been so successful. I don't want to be on meds the rest of my life but I also don't want to suffer the rest of my life.

Unfortunately when you're in the middle of a flare up it's best to eat boring but bland

So it gets better? I don't have to eat exactly like this for the rest of my life?
