    Acid relflux, Zantac barely working. Thoughts?

    Hello,

    I am a healthy 39yr old woman. Not over weight, non smoker, I havenít had alcohol in 6 months and even then it was an occasional drink. I am physically fit. Oh and I have horrible acid reflux!

    I have been able to eat what I want and really never have heartburn let alone acid reflux. About 6 months ago I started developing anxiety problems. Ofcourse stomach issues accompanied, but not heartburn. Kind of like a nervous stomach and not having much of an appetite. A couple months ago I had some bloodwork with elevated enzymes which resulted in a gastro/liver specialist referral. The good news is the anxiety finally was resolved (hard work, lol). One week before my appointment I developed acid reflux. The only thing that helped was pepto bismol, but I hesitate to take too much.

    The gastro told me to get on zantac twice a day and was not to worry about it. She said this will be gone in a week. It wasnít. She extended it saying it will be gone in two weeks. It wasnít. She switched me to Prilosec in the am and Zantac in the pm. Said do this for two more weeks and if you still arenít better then we will do an endoscopy. It wasnít better so I did an endoscopy. The endoscopy came back clear and no issues seen. All samples taken came back negative. She told me to go back on zantac twice daily and to ďstop thinking about it and it will get betterĒ.

    The zantac doesnít actually make it go away. It sorta lessens it but I donít take it and feel great. I eat a strict diet, small meals, no caffeine, only water, etc etc. I had a horrible night last night but I canít figure out why.

    Is this normal? Should I get a second opinion? Should I just take these meds for months and see what happens? Iím frustrated and although my anxiety is nearly gone, this isnít helping! Lol. Thanks in advance!

    One simple, documented non-drug trick is to chew gum. Mint can be a reflux trigger, so non-minty flavors might be best. The chewing stimulates the frequent swallowing of acid-neutrilizing saliva. It does work for me.

    Hi....were you checked for h. Pylori. Ask for a CT....could you possibly have a hernia?

    Are you having problems with constipation, gas?

    I have been checked for pylori (negative) and no hernia was reported after the endoscopy. She found nothing actually, she just said stay on the meds. I can go two ways on this. Perhaps I am being impatient and need to give the meds more time. Just weird that I am still having heartburn (a little less, but still). This doctor has really not given me any info other than just give it time and stop worrying about it. I would not describe myself as anxious at this point, just annoyed and in a bit of pain. The other side is I am concerned she has labeled me as being anxious and I should just calm down.

    I have started chewing some non-mint gum. Havenít noticed a huge difference either way, but who doesnít love gum? Lol. I also am doing yoga, chamomile tea and relaxing.

    Just seems odd that the meds arenít relieving this 100%!

    Zantac and other drugs in its class have had the reputation for years to be only so-so effective. That's why the PPIs got so much attention when they were introduced as the best replacement for the H2 blockers like Zantac. Of course, now that PPIs have been proven to be riskier than the H2 blockers, it's a whole new game.

    Zantac's active ingredient is ranitidine. The other H2 blockers are famotidine (Pepcid), cimetidine (Tagamet), nizaditine (Axid). If one doesn't work well, it's worth switching to another to see if it works better for you. Increasing the dose might be an option, too.

    I occasionally take OTC Pepcid in the lowest (10 mg) dose when the gum chewing isn't working well enough. I find, though, that my heart rate often quickens and pounds hard after I take it. I limit my use of it for that reason.

    One thing I know... If a doctor tried to tell me to just stop worrying about a problem that she isn't helping to fix, I'd be looking for a new one.

    I've had the aching stomach for a whole year. Take ppi's and strict diet. I don't ever see it going away but I don't know if I want the surgery due to the idea of complications at 70 years old.

    @midwest1
    Thank you! I have been put off by her attitude of ďjust stop worrying and you will get betterĒ. I will look into getting a second opinion. I will also look into changing up these meds, she has been insistent on zantac but with so many similar options, surely something else will work a little better!

    @digger47
    I donít blame you. Perhaps we should all seek second opinions I refuse to believe that something doesnít exist to offer you some relief other than surgery!
