Can anxiety medication cause more acid reflux though.

I have been taking an anxiety medication for awhile. It seems like I am getting more acid reflux from it. Does anyone know if anxiety medication can cause more acid reflux. Any advice would be nice. Thanks.

I would say yes, but anxiety itself I think can cause acid reflux. I been on anti depressants and anti anxiety meds for over 10 years, and off and on I get attacks of acid reflux. I hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon.

Reflux is a mechanical issue based on the functioning itself...releasing stomach acid into the esophagus. Some medications cause higher acid levels in the stomach causing the said stomach acid to be more corrosive and damaging to areas where it shouldnt be.

So...if you have reflux, best to take a med such as a PPI to help lower the stomach acid so it doesnt cause as much pain or damage.

Have you had an upper endoscopy?

Look up foods that cause high acid, and avoid them to see if that helps. Try Pepcid AC if you dont want to venture into PPI territory. I would avoid the Pepcid AC Complete as it has aluminum in it (personal preference avoidance).

Thanks. I think it would be cool if I have less anxiety. Then maybe I will have less acid reflux though. Ya I had an endoscopy done already. It was ok though. I am taking the prevacid medication for the gerd condition. It only works a little though. Do you know of any other ppi that is better to help with the condition. Thanks.

Not that I have, but there are always contraindications and things to be aware of. One has to research and weigh the benefits. Personally...the relief from discomfort is extremely helpful mentally, and I have no side effects as of yet.

You could start to see improvement in a week. Start with omeprazole or esomeprazole. Take a half hour before eating breakfast.
However...are you on other meds and when do you usually take them?

Thanks. I think I may try it. Ya I am taking the lexapro which is an antidepressant medication though. I take it before I sleep though. Will that cause any side effect to it. Thanks.

When do you normally take the omeprazole?
I suggest as soon as you wake up 30 minutes before breakfast. Take your antidepressant at bedtime. No interference since they arent at the same time.

If you don't eat breakfast, take it half hour before lunch or supper.

Directions state it's best to take it 30 to 40 mins before eating. I have many times forgotten and take it just before I eat. But it's not the mose efficient.

One can take Prevacid AC just before or just after eating...its mechanism is differsnt than a PPI.

I dont know of anything specifically, because I haven't followed one specifically.

Do a search for " GERD, reflux and heartburn diet" and you will get a wide range of exclusions and additions.
