    Breathing trouble

I know lots of people have beathing troubles with GERD and I have had them so bad today I can't stand it. I am scared it is going to turn into asthma. I don't need to make another trip to the hospital. I was just wondering who has regular breathing troubles with GERD and what their breathing feels like and if they have tested for asthma and came back fine. Thanks

    Re: Breathing trouble

    Hi,
I posted a message but had no response, but I too had a breathing problem. I went to my Dr. and he first changed my blood pressure meds, but nothing. Next he sent me(he thought it might be asthma) to an asthma/allergy specialist. That Dr. tested me for both asthma and allergies and found nothing, however he said he had just read about GERD so he put me on Prevacid. Bingo no more problems, now, if I go 4 or 5 days without the medicine, my breathing problem starts again. I have not been to a gastrointestinal(sp) Dr. yet but I really need to have the endoscopy done.

I too have regular breathing problems that feel like I am on the verge of an asthma attack. The Dr's keep telling me I have allergies and such which I am sure I do but the breathing problems go away with Nexium so....And thus far I have not had an asthma attack so I don't worry too much. I also have a rescue inhaler just in case and I have never had to use it.

I have severe GERD and Anxiety, when the GERD kicks into high gear the anxiety starts up and I have a hard time breathing. I take meds for gerd and the anxiety and those help.
Taking any antispasmatic meds like bentyl or donnatol or hysocamine which are sometimes given to quite the digestive tract do have side affects of breathing trouble.
I dont know if your on those but I was and I thought I was going to die on them.

How long have you been on Nexium. I was on a PPI called Pariet for 2 weeks and then Nexium now for 2 weeks but still problems.

    Re: Breathing trouble

I have reflux related asthma. When the reflux is controlled, my asthma med needs cut way down.

    Pattiaugs,
Wow, you can have lung damage from reflux. I did not know that. I think I will make an app. now to have the endoscopy(sp) done. How long has your son had this problem?

Lung damage from reflux is much less common in adults than in perdiatrics.

    rhodasoda,
I'm not sure, but I don't think asthma would up on an x-ray. I was tested with some machine you blow into and boy do I mean blow. You keep blowing until there is no breath left in you...
