    What are symptoms of GERD?

    Hello Everyone,

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what symptoms constitute having GERD. I know that everyone gets heartburn once in a while, so if you have GERD does that mean you have heartburn all the time, everyday, for a long period of time (ie months, years etc)? Just worried because for 2 years or so I've been burping a lot (even if I've just woken up and have an empty stomach), and after meals I will have a slight burning right down the middle of my chest along with upper back sensations. Again, is GERD heartburn that you get ALL the time, EVERY day/night? I don't get anything during the night. Not that I'm aware of anyway.

One more question. For those that have had GERD for a few years and went on to have an endoscopy, were any of you diagnosed with Barrett's?

The reason behind all these questions is that my grandfather died from throat/esophagus cancer and he was found to have Barrett's. He was 69 when he passed. SOOOO, I'm a tad worried about my continual symtoms. I'm going to go get checked out, but I don't want my doctor to just hand me so tums and send me on my way. I don't want to start taking meds without knowing exactly what has been going on in there. How do I insist on getting the endoscopy?

First and foremost, you should absolutely go to a GI doctor and have a discussion. If he feels your symptoms are GERD, you should get an endoscopy performed, to diagnose properly before being put on meds.

I never get heartburn, but I've been diagnosed with a small hiatal hernia, reflux and gastritis. I get the burning sensation, too, and a sour stomach.

I am now on Nexium, which has helped greatly, along with following a strict diet of low fat foods and stay away from all the no-no's

    Best of luck,

    L.

I'd be interested in finding out if there is such a thing as a "mini-GERD". I've had a few nights of regurgitated stomach acid suddenly waking me up. It was always viewed by me as rather insignificant since it was so infrequent.

Many of us wake up with some sort of 'morning breath' or something. I've been waking up with a thick red mucous at the back of my throat and wonder if the red-tinge comes from oral bleeding such as from the gums or from stomach acid in a small quantity that is insufficient to be full-blown GERD.

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

I was diagnosed with GERD about 6 years ago. I have burning sensations in my upper abdomen area especially after I eat in the evening. It's very, very painful and it can get worse over time if not treated. I sometimes have to take a hot bath to make it go away, but it does work.

I get pains in my stomach, and it goes up to my shoulders and neck. What happens is that the LES (the little sphinkter that separates the stomach from the esophagus) is shrunk. This allows acid to get into your asophagus, causeing painful heartburn.

Whatever you do, don't lay down when you are having these pains because it will make it worse. Drink as much water as you can, and try some over the counter medications like Zantac 150 or Prilosec OTC. These have worked well for me. You can also try putting some books under the headboard of your bed, so you can sleep on an incline. Try to avoid acidic foods....oranges, lemons, tomatoes, greasy foods, chocolate, caffiene, etc.

I'm not a doctor, but I have lived with this for a long time, and it sucks! I hope that I have been of some help to you.

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

    Hi there,

Thanks for your replies. It helps out a lot.

I don't get the typical burning feeling, but there is a feeling of mild pressure (maybe it's a very mild burning) in my chest, right down the middle. More noticable after I eat. I've been burping like crazy lately, too! I wake up and I have to burp. Not belch, but little burps all day. I've been trying to chew my food thoroughly and eat smaller meals more often, and of course avoiding citris/acid/spicy (some of my favorites!) Still have the crazy burping. So, it could be GERD, th ebroccoli I ate or it could be anxiey over thinking I have GERD.

Given my grandfathers history with Barrett's and cancer I'm going to go get checked out. Anyone that's had GERD for a few years been diagnosed with Barrett's? Just wondering. I'm kind of worried about that the most.

Take care everyone! Thanks again for you replies!

I tested negative for Barrett's, thankfully, and I'm sure you will, too.

I burp mini burps all day long, too, especially after roughage. You mentioned broccoli.

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

Thanks mymeka. It's encouraging to hear that you tested neg for Barrett's. Do you mind my asking how long you've had GERD? I know that the longer you have it, the higher your chances of serious damage. I had another question to ask you but it slipped my mind just now! Oh well................

I'm gonna make appt with the doc tomorrow. I just get so anxious reading symptoms on the internet. I read about GERD and I just worry all day and night about GERD and Barrett's and cancer, etc. A friend of mine described it as "med student syndrome". You know, the med student that starts learning about diseases and symtpoms and thinks they have every symptom in the book!

'Do you mind my asking how long you've had GERD? I know that the longer you have it, the higher your chances of serious damage.'

I was sick beginning after a heavy Father's Day meal I made for my Dad back in June, and was tested Sept. 1 (endoscopy). Dr. put me on Nexium, and with adhering to a low fat diet, I feel great, thankfully!

DON'T worry so much - I, too, had myself all worked up about cancer, etc. They even removed a polyp from my esophogus, and it tested benign. You will be fine, too!

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

Other than the foul taste in the mornings, is there any real downside to this condition?

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

I have been diagnosed with GERD.

Here are some of my symptoms:
    1) Chest Pain
    2) Pain below sternum (pit of stomache, like I was pucnched)
    3) Belching
    4) Reflux into throat, sometimes even while elevated
    5) Lower abdominal bloating
    6) Slight Constipation (may be from the aciphex)
    7) Weakness, tired
    8) Sensitive Lower Abdomin (to touch, running or jarring)
    9) Burning Sensation in Lower Abdomin
    10) Wake from pain nights and morning, sometimes severe

I had an upper GI and no cancer or Barrett's, but my throat was swollen. They say that Barrett's is rare. I asked my GI specialist if they thought that it was alchoholics or people who ignored the symptoms who got Barrett's but he says they are not sure but they suspect so.

The first two meds I used did not work. Now I use Aciphex. I think each person is different.

Throat coat tea, and ginger tea work very well for my throat and stomache. Also some probiotics and enzymes can help aid digestion (like what is in yogurt). This is helpful for anyone using proton pump inhibitors (to block acid) becuse they help aid in digestion.

I noticed I was tightening my stomache so much I was having severe cramping. Woke up with panic attacks thinking I was going to die. Then I had to learn to realize that I would not die right then and there in my bed. I was safe and warm in my bed. That helped (staying in the moment). I'm learning to relax more now and meditating which seems to help a lot.

Here is a list of huge GERD non no's
    Alchohol
    Caffine (chocolate, coffee, etc)
    Spicy Foods
    Over Eating
    Onoins
    Tomatoes
    Fried Foods
    Fatty Foods
    Dehydration
    Mints
    Citrus (also apples)
    Nicotine
    Eating 3-4 hours before bed
    Lying flat (elevated is best)
    Ketchup, mustard

I also suspect pretty much anything with sugar (my own observations with my body).

Try avoiding the things on the list and if you have GERD, it will help a lot.

    Hope You Feel Better, Blessings

I'm sorry to hear that. I assume that your case would be considered to have been a severe one. I guess mine, although virtually life-long, would still be viewed as comparatively mild.

Are there any medical consequences to having this fould tasting gastric blood in my throat in the mornings? It does not seem to be causing any major problems, but I wonder if it might be contributing to my fatigue?

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

    JennyVee,
When my upset stomach symptoms started about 2 months ago I started drinking ginger ale and it felt like it helped digest my food. My stomach keep feeling like I needed something carbonated so I started drinking alot of carbonated water. I found out from reading this forum that the carbonation was making everything worse and causing more acid. So I stopped drinking anything with carbonation.

Re: What are symptoms of GERD?

    Hi everyone,

After reading some of the entries, I tried organic raw apple cider vinegar in water with stevia. I found immediate relieve from the acid reflux burning up into my mouth. However, it didn't last long. I have suffered this on and off for many years and don't eat or use any of the no-no foods or practices. Occassionally I will have a piece of dark organic chocolate. Stress seems to play a hugh part because in my case life style doesn't seem to be the problem. There is one other thing that probably causes difficulty and that is not exercising enough. I appreciate the opportunity to share these thoughts with others and in that way can also hear them myself. I hope we are all on the road to recovery. Many blessings.
