Prevacid vs. Prilosec OTC

I have been a GERD sufferer starting 8 years ago, with times of extreme attacks that include upper stomach pain and unbelievable chest pain that radiates into my back. I took Prevacid for about 5 years and the GERD stopped completely. I became pregnant in June of '03 and stopped taking the Prevacid, because I was worried about the side effects on my daughter.

I had no problems with GERD and thought I'd been cured of it until it came back with a vegence in September of this year. I ended up in the ER thinking maybe this time it was my gallbladder, but no the GERD was back. The ER doctor put me back on Prevacid and it has been working great. My only problem is I no longer have insurance and the Prevacid is costing me $155/month.

I spoke with either a Pharmacist or a Tech at my Pharmacy this evening, and asked about a cheaper alternative to Prevacid. He recommended Prilosec OTC. I asked if the dosage would be the same and he said 30 capsules of Prilosec is equal to about 25 capsules of Prevacid. I am seriously considering switching to Prilosec, but need to know side effects, effectiveness, etc. before making the switch. Does anyone out there have any input on one versus the other. I have been lucky to not have side effects with Prevacid and it has always worked great for me. I'd appreciate any advice.

Re: Prevacid vs. Prilosec OTC

Before I could have an endoscopy, I had to take Prilosec OTC. Insurance would not pay for the test unless I took something over-the-counter for two weeks. I found that it worked fairly well. Yet, I had to be really careful about what I ate. As far as side effects, I don't remember any particular side effect except some abdominal discomfort that went away with persistent use of the medication. I do remember that I had to also use Milanta at times (not often) while taking the Prilosec OTC. Unfortunately, it did not completely alleviate the pain.

Now, I am on Nexium. It has really helped alot. Of course, I still have to be careful about what I eat. However, it has been more of a trial and error in the eating department for me.

I am sorry that you are in the situation that you have to make such a choice.

Re: Prevacid vs. Prilosec OTC

I think Prilosec produces less problems than Privacid== that is what my Doctor thinks also.
