    does getting worse mean cancer?

I have had diagnosed GERD for over 10 years and been on Prilosec and Nexium continuously during that time. When my prescription runs out of one or the other (now just Nexium), I sometimes don't get to the drugstore right away and I start experiencing symptoms again. It seems like when the medicines wear off, my symptoms are more severe than they used to be. My doctor said that as long as the meds work, he's not concerned with doing an endoscopy to check things out. Is this wise? Can the meds mask cancer or a worsening case of GERD? I only have to take one dose of Nexium or two of OTC Prilosec to relieve my symtoms, so I haven't been worried until I felt the extreme hurting in my esophagus the last time I was without the meds. I ran to the pharmacy and got relief it hurt so bad!

i understand what your trying to say, if i was in that situation i would definetly ask for further testing, or seek a different Doctor. I'm pretty sure, nobody wants to rely on medicine all their life. I refuse to medicine myself, because, i haven't had enuff testing done. I have eliminated the fact that it's not a heart problem. That what i would do first. Hope that helps

I've only been on medication for 2 months and I feel uncomfortable taking it without a diagnosis. I'm waiting an upcoming app't. It seems like it's negligent not to test you if you've been on medication for 10 years. Can you get a different doctor if this one is refusing to test you?

You should absolutely have a scope done. You can deal better w/ pain when you are armed with the knowledge of a diagnosis.
My sister has had gastric problems for 7 years. Its not uncommon to carry these problems over a long course of time.
But yes, you should ask your primary for a referral to get a scope done asap.

I have heard, when you stop these types of meds, you get rebound reflux, for a while while you body ajusts. I don't thunk its a good idea, to stop and start them all the time.

Your probably right, I just wonder why I felt better off the medication.
