    Chronic Gastritis

I've had chronic gastritis for 12 years now. I've been to several specialists, had several scopes and biopsies. My symptoms do not match up with what they see. I have constant, chronic burning under my breastbone and in the stomach 24/7. It's worse at night and the burning wakes me up several times a night. Once I get up and walk around, it subsides.

I don't think there is another person in the world like me! I've tried every PPI on the market; carafate, OTC meds, herbs, anti anxiety meds because it was suspected it would relax my stomach. I've tried nothing and have tried everything.

I have slight nausea once in awhile; can usually eat okay. Some foods bother me and I've given up coffee and the nightly glass of wine. I've given up most of the foods I love. I am not overweight at all and exercise four days a week. I just turned 60 this year and have been battling this for so long now, I feel like there are days I will surely lose my mind.

This gives you a picture; I can go on and on but if there is someone out there who has been dealing with gastritis and has found something that works to get rid of it; please let me know.

I don't have GERD, refulx or an ulcer. No hernia. Just chronic gastritis. I've been tested for Hpylori via biopsies and it's always come back negative.

Do you take any medications that could be causing the gastritis?

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

    Hi,
I'm in a pretty similar situation. I do have LPR and gastritis both
I have the burning pretty much constant, in my stomach up to my neck, and mouth even. It doesn't matter if I eat nothing or something, or do meds or no meds. Actually the meds helped a little, but not enough and the side effects were not fun, so am trying other things.
Are you taking any meds at all? And are you taking any vitamins? The interesting thing, I stopped taking all vitamins that were tablets (hard, not capsules) and have been noting that I feel a little better...Just a thought. i think that sometimes we forget about those things, and they can be hard on the stomach.
Just a thought I wanted to throw out there.
Oh have you tried Gaviscon? That does help me a little with the burning.
I hope you get some relief soon, at least you know it's not an ulcer or something serious.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

Thanks so much for your reponse. I didn't think anyone would post because I really think I am a case study and the only person dealing with this.

I don't take vitamins any longer. I use to but stopped months ago. Nor do I take medication for anything else.

I tried Gavison but it didn't help. Trust me, I have tried everything. Even spent money on Pine Nut oil that was suppose to cure gastritis.

I have worries that somethig this chronic will end up turning into something serious.

It baffles me that GERD is treated successfully with PPI's and other meds but the doctors are at a standstill when it comes to treating gastritis.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

have you tried Nat Phos. #10 (homeopathic) tissue salts? I've just started taking them. We'll seeeee. (they aren't expensive).

I'm still struggling with GERD/LPR, and haven't found a cure, or a treatment either so Gerd isn't always successfully treated by meds.
I keep trying things, and have found some things to be helpful.
I wish you well, and some relief soon.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

i also believe that so much of this chronic stuff, is stress related and induced and don't know what to do to eliminate stress, it's hard when you are bombarded by life's stuggles and challenges on a daily basis. So I practice breathing, and taking deep breaths as often as I can, but some people are just more prone to anxiety and stress, don't know if you are but i know i am.
and that takes its toll on our digestive system among other things.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

Thanks Backslide! I never tried the salts. I've been trying to find a product named Iberogast. It's from Enzymatic Theraphy but I can't seem to find it!

Stress related - funny you say that. I had one doctor send me to a shrink because he felt it was in my head, meaning, something was causing it. No doctor denies that I have chronic gastritis, they just can't figure out why.

About five years ago, I went to a specialist at Northwestern Medical downtown Chicago. He listened and listened. He prescribed Librax He suspected that I had a digestion problem, not a "too much acid problem." He said the muscles in my stomach were not relaxing enough to allow my food to digest therefore causing something simlair to fementation. I took a very low does of Librax, four times a day and it worked wonders. I was symptom free for six months. I then decided that I didn't need it as I felt I was "cured" Stopped takng it; 2 weeks later, the symptoms were back and when I started taking the Librax again, it didn't help. Seems that you get immune to it after awhile. The doctor had retired that year so it was like I had to start all over again. So, I struggled for a few months, went to another doctor, explained what was going on and he prescribed some anti anxiety pill and it did nothing.

So, stress, sure there's stress. Who doesn't have it when they feel crappy all the time. That in itself causes depression and stress.

I would just like to have a few days of feeling good without trying medication after medication.

Tell me about this salt stuff you take.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

    Hi there!

I too suffer from chronic gastritis. I also have GERD and Lyme disease.

    My questions to you are:

    1. Have they tested other organs in your abdomin (gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, etc)?

    2. What kinds of tests have you had done?

    3. What kinds of prescription meds have you tried?

I take probiotics which help a little. I also take liquid carafate (prescription only) and it does help and coats my stomach.

I know how frustrated you are. Its awful!!

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

    nanci-
the Nat Phos #10 is by NuAge and you can find in health food stores.
i don't know where you are but I'm in california and we have health food stores all over..I would check there or maybe look for it online.
    Nu-Age
    Nat Phos #10 (Sodium Phosphate)

    It's not hard to find.
I can't find Iberogast. Seems to be sold out online. Maybe it'll come back available. Meanwhile you might also try DGL licorice, another thing I take.
I also take Aloe Vera liquid or capsules. I don't take any HARD vitamins only capsules or liquid and I'm only taking thyroid medication, no meds. i think the meds did me more harm than good.
I didn't believe that stress could be making me suffer with such physical problems, but now I am a believer. I also had heart palps and racing heart which I now attribute to stress.
I am committed to trying to heal myself and do whatever it takes to feel as good as I can each day. Some days are better than others, but it's important to keep the faith and not give in to depression or it will control you. I know that's easier said than done.

Oh, I also take priobiotics, for what it's worth..
    take care,
    backie.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

Thanks; gee, what have I taken!!! I have a laundry list! Every PPI out there that includes Nexium and other big guns. Liquid Carafate; OTC meds like Zantac, Gaviscon. On the natural side; I've taken DGL, Aloe, all kinds of herbs. AMP that I bought on line. I tried NEEM, pine nut oil and probiotics.

I've had ultra sounds on every organ in my body. I just had a MRI heart scan and the score was zero, no plaque in my arteries. Over the past ten years, I've had six scopes. Overall, I am pretty heathy. I have a yearly wellness test every year and it's always a zero score; meaning, nothing is going on!

I am also committed to finding a natural cure and keep searching the internet for breakthroughs.

The Iberogast has been discontinued but you can still find it if you look hard enough. It's made in Germany and supposedly a very good product. I spoke to the people at Enzymatic Theraphy yesterday and they say it was supply and demand; there was nothing wrong with the product. In fact, the woman I spoke to said it was a very good product for digestive issues. Of course, I've heard this before so I am not expecting miracles. I did finally find a site that still sells it. It's been used for over 30 years and has no known side effects.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

The best remedy I have found for gastritis is Mastic Gum. I use the Mastica brand and I now buy it from the Vitamin Shoppe-- but it can be bought online.

It is a remedy that has been used for hundreds of years by the greeks for Gastro problems. A doctor (MD) that uses Alternative Medicine in his practice first gave it to me in 2001.

It cured my gastritis in 2 weeks. I took 2 -500mg caps between meals and just so happened to have an endosope exam scheduled 6 months previously and the Gastro Doctor that did the endoscopy said that the inflammation was gone -- nothing to take photos of . The Gastro Doctor had prescribed Aciphex 6 months previously-- it did not help for several months. So I stopped taking it.

I also took a probiotic supplement daily as prescribed by the Doctor but I do that anyway--- I just didn't take the brand he recommended. I took PB-8.

I certainly think it is worth a try.

Thanks Harry; I've never tried mastic gum although I heard about it some time ago.

How do you take it? Meaning, how often.

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

    nanci,

I take it 2 -500mg caps twice daily between breakfast and lunch and the same between lunch and supper. I have read that some makers say take it before breakfast-- basically on an empty stomach. The first time I took it -- I took it for 30 days (a bottle contains 120 capsules) even though the Gastro Doc said I did not have any gastritis /inflammation after 14 days.

I usually get gastritis at least by the symptoms I have-- (not verified with an endo exam) everytime I take an antibiotic for 5 days or so.

I have found it an extremely good remedy to have on hand or close by so you can buy.

The remedy is dated and I don't take it if it is out of date.

    I wish you well~~~Harry

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

One more question if you don't mind Harry.

It sounds like this is not something you need to take once you no longer have symptoms. But say you eat somethnig that gives you burning or heartburn, you can take it to alliviate the symptoms and once they dissipate, you can stoop?

I guess what I'm asking is -- is it just as effective taking it for a day or more or do you need to take it long term to get benefits.

    Am I making sense!

    Re: Chronic Gastritis

I have never taken Mastica for such symptoms but It sounds like a good Idea-- I do take a digestive enzyme with meals and really get heartburn.

After the symptoms of gastritis goes away, I just stop. Then eventually the remedy goes out of date.
