Smile Here's what has been working for me

****THIS IS A LONG POST- Sorry...I just didn't want to skip something****

First, a little history: I started having plain old indigestion when I was pregnant in '04. Zantac worked great...then, gradually, stopped working. I saw the GI specialist who did an EGD and prescribed a PPI for gastritis and GERD (although I never had heartburn, per se. It was always in the back of my mouth/throat area.) I saw an ENT specialist this October because I had gotten so much worse. He said it was LPR and put me on Protonix 40 in the AM and Zantac 75 before bed. I got WORSE. It got to where I was on the Protonix in the morning and Zantac 4x per day. (I switched over to Prilosec OTC because the Protonix wasn't working and was much more expensive.) And I would get acid in my throat just from a sip of water to take my meds in the morning or sometimes just wake up with that acidy feeling in my throat and it would have been many hours since my last meal...

I've been doing a LOT of reading online and decided to give my naturopathic doctor another shot at helping me heal. I presented all my ideas to him for his opinion and here's what I've been doing:

He suggested to WEAN off the PPI and Zantac however I felt I could handle it...he said to use the Zantac as needed and focus on the Prilosec since the Zantac was shorter lasting and gave me the best results. My end goal, though, was to be off both.

I started by taking DGL. I take the Enzymatic Therapy brand even though it tastes horrible to me. 2 lozenges have 760mg of DGL. I take this 20 minutes before each meal and in between if needed.
I also added some digestive enzymes- bromelain and papaya. The bromelain is by Jarrow Formulas, 1,000GDU per 500mg tablet, 1 tablet at the start of each meal. The papaya is by Royal Tropics and contains 280 to 480MCU per gram. I take 2 capsules (this equals 900 mg) at the start of each meal.
I added chlorella, too...which is by Jarrow Formulas. It's the Yaeyama chlorella. I started out by taking 3 tablets, once per day...I'm now at 5 tablets, 3x per day. I take this at the same time as the digestive enzymes.
And I also added probiotics. I am taking Jarrow Formulas Jarro Dophilus FOS. I take 3 capsules 30 minutes or so after dinner.

After doing this for a week, I began adding in Apple Cider Vinegar. I just use Trader Joe's organic ACV... I was SO scared to try this in case it burned. So I mixed 1 teaspoon into about 3 ounces of water and downed it. No burn. Then I ate my meal...I did have some of the old burping and acidy feeling about an hour after I ate, so, crazy as it sounds, I took a bit more ACV. All the burping and acid feeling stopped.
I've been on the ACV for a few days and I am really beginning to feel a LOT better.

Also, the ND suggested not drinking any fluids with my meals (except for the few ounces to take the ACV) and waiting 2 hours before resuming fluids. So I've been sticking to this, too...

I haven't taken any Zantac since last Thursday and any Prilosec since last Friday. Today, I had no acid feeling upon waking and didn't get ANY reflux from taking my morning thyroid pill.

I'm not saying this will work for everybody...I just wanted to share the results I've been having in case somebody wants to give it a shot. I know some people truly do have hyperacidic stomachs and this plan could make it worse. I feel that in my particular situation, I was having so many problems from too little acid. I know I didn't get to feeling horrible overnight so getting to feeling better may take some time as well but I can already feel a change and I'm optimistic.

    I hope this helps...

Hi, that was a long but inspiring story you have there... so I take it that you give the credit to apple cider vinegar? I just bought a bottle and its still sitting on my cupboard, im still quite hesitant to try it... but for sometime now maybe a month or so, I havent been taking any medications... I am scared though that since my body is not getting any help my condition might get worse... I am having exactly the same symptoms as you.. GERD and gastritis... well now I am ready to try the ACV. By the way how to do take it? it tatse rather nasty just the smell makes me feel so acidic... but if it works for you.. im willing to give it a shot

Start slow. Use about 1 teaspoon in a few ounces of water. You can add honey, too. I didn't. I just gulped it down.
The way I see it, if you get burning in the few minutes after, you can neutralize with baking soda and know that maybe you have excessive acid already. When I didn't get ANY burning and got only relief, I knew I'd do ok.

Re: Here's what has been working for me

Ok...I haven't been on in a long time but I thought I'd post an update in case somebody can use the information.
I had been using ACV then my doctor had me start using betaine HCL. I gradually increased the dose until I reached my magic number. I would take betaine HCL with every meal practically.
Well, last week it seemed like I was getting too much so I backed off. Now, I am taking very little betaine HCL.
I read that the stomach can be retrained to produce adequate amounts of acid by using the betaine HCL but didn't believe it... It seems like that is what's happening though.
I have been taking very, very little and have been having little to no digestive problems.
I know this problem wouldn't have resolved itself if I had stayed on PPI's and H2 whatchamacallits.
I'm so glad I went the other route...
I may always deal with stuff here and there, but I'm glad I know that low acid was the problem. My other doctors had been treating me with drugs for "too much acid" and that clearly was not the problem.

The ACV remedy worked for me except I put 1/4 tsp of baking soda in it to balance the ph levels. Anyway, I have been off of the Nexium for about 2 1/2 weeks now and I am feeling great. I started with the Zantac then Prilosic and then the nexium because it kept getting worse and nother worked. Cost me a small foturne. After about 5 yrs of being on the nexium, I realized that this can't be good long term. I too am grateful to finally get a natural remedy that really works. By the way, 5 days on the ACV and 2 days off. Gotta give it a rest, so I have heard.

    Yippeeeee.

Good to know, Classact. How much ACV a day? 1/4tsp baking soda in a glass of water with the ACV added? Do you take it with, before or after meals?
It sure is a LOT CHEAPER than Nexium!
