Anyone get upper back spasms , aka esophagus pain

never had it before. I used to be a regular on here talking about acid reflux and curing it with acidophilus, apple cider vinegar and doubling my water intake.

But not sure what i ate or am doing but i now i have this upper back pain on upper right side next to the shoulder with a sensation of needing to burp.

I noticed 5 min ago it gets worse after eating a banana and thought that was weird.

Yes, I certainly can relate....same thing going on. My pain is right between my shoulder blades. Going in at 6:30 am tomorrow for an upper Endiscope..I have had Reflux for years and years...seems to just be getting worse and my doc said yesterday that as we age, it seems to get worse. A little worried, but at a point that I want to have this stop. I am tired of feeling like I have a chuck of bread stuck between my chest bone. You are not alone. Hang in there....go have it checked out...you will feel better!

Me too! I have had that feeling for a month or so. I feel it more when I burp. and I also feel it on the right side of my throat/esophegas. I've been massaging it (between the shoulder blade and spine)with a tennis ball between me and the wall. I roll the ball up and down and it seems to help. but it always comes back and it's defeinately related to the esophegas, I can feel it. If it doesn't go away soon I will get it checked out.
    What the heck is it!?!
    Good luck, be well.

My back hurts all the time - I hurt right through from front of chest and upper stomach - to back, all the time.

I have the same symptoms. I have spent the better part of the last 6 months trying to get a dx and finally an ENT doctor told me that I am suffering from acid reflux. She put a scope down my nose into my throat and saw it was inflamed from acid.
When I asked her why this wasn't picked up by my gastro doctor during an endoscopy, she said it doesn't always show up on it. She put me on zantac (otc) and I think I am feeling a little better.

Re: Anyone get upper back spasms , aka esophagus pain

I've only found this site today. And here I've been worried so much about the upper back pains I've been getting! They come and go,in spasms, but they seem to "run" up and down my back... like lightning flickers is the closest to describe them. Then at night and in the morning I feel just a really rotten general muscle ache. I get them between my shoulder blades and up into my neck, and yes, through to the front of my chest.
The doctors think I have gerd too, because of chest pain and shortness of breath, and I have a history of reflux. I thought I would recognize it as GERD when it comes back, but each time is a little bit different and a bit scarier. I have been having all the chest pain, back pain, shortness of breath etc happening for weeks and was down town when I felt very weird. Extreme tightness and short of breath, Like I was going to pass out. I took myself to the hospital and they ran the heart tests, but think it is GERD again.

    Lilly,

This same thing happened to me while grocery shopping. I had to leave my half-filled shopping cart, get into the car and drive home and lie down. I was really sick and nauseated. Do you ever get nausea with your SOB?

Hi FG, Yes, I get nausea. Actually that's what started this whole last episode for me. 2 months ago, I was half way through a delicious home made smoothie, when the nausea hit. Instead of vomiting though, I had instant diarrhoea and then chest and leg pains and upper back pains, and I really thought it was my heart. The nausea passed, but not the other things. Ever since then I've been getting these weird symptoms as well as classic gerd. And for days on end I feel like I'm car sick... real motion sickness.
But then I get sinus and ear ache (probably from the reflux too) and that can make me nauseous.
I am still worried it is my heart. I've had reflux before but not had the SOB for days on end like this.
4 days ago when I was grocery shopping and it hit me, I wasn't so much nauseous, as i again had a case of instant runs. I was pushing a trolley too, but a full one, and as I was going through the checkout, I could hardly sign the credit card slip, because I couldn't get my breath, and my chest felt like I was suffocating. I got myself and the groceries into the car and took myself to the ER though?
I've got the shortness of breath now while I'm at the computer, and it feels like my whole chest and stomach and head is full of salt water!! Like I've been dumped under the surf, and swallowed a whole wave. I've been just eating brown rice and steamed vegies and avocado, and taking pepcid but no relief.
I get scared because the symptoms are those of angina too, and the dr's haven't ruled that out yet, but I have to wait a month to have the test. Ridiculous, but that's our shortage of doctors down under. SO what do I do meanwhile. The Dr said, come back if you get worried. Well, they may as well keep me there, because how do you not worry? He thinks it is probably reflux, but then says, it could be masking angina as well..
Love to hear back from you. Lily

You are from down under! Just to let you know that the shortage of doctors where I live is not any different from yours. You have to wait months for an appointment with a specialist. This could be the reason the doctors here are often unwilling to book our referrals early on. My doctor waits, and waits, and waits before doing anything for me at all (not counting prescribing the meds - he is too free with those!). He hopes I'll either forget about it (as if that were possible when you can't breathe!) or that it will go away, depending on what the problem is. He told me himself. So, basically, unless a dire emergency, it takes months for my doctor to decide I need a referral, and then months of waiting to see a specialist. It's extremely frustrating. It's the same with most tests. A LONG wait. Our healthcare system is failing and needs a complete overhaul.

When you can't breathe, does your chest, throat and mouth feel as if on fire?
    Does it hurt? Mine does!

Well, what can I say? I too get scared thinking it could be heart related. My cardiologist did not think so. This was months ago..yes, I've had it that long.
I just got my doctor to admit it could be heart related. I had pulmonary function tests done recently (ordered by another doctor who'd studied my medical records and felt sorry for me while mine was on holidays) that indicated I could have asthma but did not rule out other causes for my breathing difficulties. That's not very helpful. I have talked to three asthmatics since. Not one of them experiences the kind of breathlessness I have. I am glad you have a more resonable doctor that you can believe in.
The not being able to breathe is so scary. And so limiting as to what I can do. Something must be done about it. I'd like to be able to go back to work someday. I've been off work for 8 months now for medical reasons with no end in sight.

    Take care,

    Flowergirl

Alot of cramping and spasm problems are caused by lack of magnesium in your system.

There is a Sticky Thread at the top of the Digestive Disorders board that was started about 4 years ago -- by bluepumkin titled-- "GERD Suffers-- I feel Good Let Me Tell You Why"
It was started when Acid Reflux was included in that board.
Some of the members posting on this thread as well as this board -- have the same problem with lacking magnesium in their diet?

I think some of this long thread may be worth reading.

I get the burning feel, but not necessarily with the shortness of breath, I mean not exactly at the same time. I get so much stuff happening though at the same time, that it's often hard to distinguish. I probaby focus on the scariest one, and that's it.
The shortness of breath seems to happen when I feel like a brick is jammed under my sternum, and then at times it feels like I have a whole apartment block jammed in there. The one that sent me to the ER was a bit different again. Like a squeezing suffocating feeling around my ribs. Mostly I just have to consciously take a deep breath to get that satisfied, got-to-the-bottom-of-my-lungs-at-last-feeling. This other one was more like I couldn't breathe at all.
I've got the burning thing happening now actually, and yes, I've been doing the deep breath thing, so sometimes they DO happen together. I've just never stopped to think about that..
The burning feels like I have inhaled chili juice. I know there is no liquid there, so must be just the fumes off the gas, like petrol fumes I suppose? Can that happen? I always get strained voice, sinus and earache when I have bad reflux, and yet I don't get a whole lot of the regurgitation of actual acid... just occasionally, so I presume all the burning of mucous membranes is just from the fumes.
oh dear, you could only talk like that on these boards. Imagine me telling my neighbour stuff like that. It is so so reassuring to be able to talk about our weird but so real symptoms without reserve on here.
    Cheers from Lily

Re: Anyone get upper back spasms , aka esophagus pain

Thanks Harry. I'm glad you brought that up, because I wanted to ask about that. I have read that thread and actually started taking magnesium 2 days ago. I find that tablets have always aggravated my reflux, and once I remember taking 2 magnesium capsules and getting instant heartburn when I hadn't had it for months.
The one I'm trying now is a soluble calcium magnesium powder that is supposed to be one of the best you can buy down here. But it is fizzy. And it made me nauseated the first time, and then I took it again last night and I think it might have set the old heartburn going.
Normally it would be fine, but I'm in the throes of wretched reflux these days. I guess it might take a while to start having effect. I just thought I'd be better with an easily absorbed one like this, even if it does trigger a few burps?
What made me particularly interested in the magnesium thread is this. I only just found this website because I was looking up reflux, but I have also been suffering from weird muscle pains in my legs too... twitches and cramps and general achiness. I thought it was a separate issue, until I read about magnesium, and put the two together. I just never thought of my reflux as being a form of muscle spasm the same as my leg spasms till then.
So I would love to learn as much as I can about how successful others have found it.
    Thank you for your care.
    Regards Lily
