Red face Nausea/gag/vomiting/retch feeling that I cannot control!!!!!

I have allergies and and sinus problems. I had done allergy shots for almost 3 years when I was younger but they had no affect. I am going to redo the allergy shots sometime soon.

I am now taking Xantac and Prevacid for about a month to see if my GERD symptoms improve. My ENT diagnosed me with possible LPR but he wasn't sure. All he said was that I probably had an overactive gag reflex.

The main problem I am trying to fix is once in a while I would get some type of irritation in my upper throat behind my tongue that makes me have to urge to vomit or gag. Basically I think it is my gag reflex reacting to something but I am not sure.

Think of how it would feel as you attempt to put your finger down your throat. As you go nearer into your throat you'll start to feel like gagging. Or another example would be if you look at something really really gross that makes you want to throw up. Thats the same EXACT feeling except this is constant every day sometimes every few minutes.

It is a lot worse when I am exercising or running. After a while of running I start to get that feeling in my throat and that causes me to stop and is holding me back from doing what ever I am doing to my fullest capablilties. It is there all the time and it feels like I am going to throw up and I have to stop myself from doing it what ever I am doing at the moment. I have had this since I was young and I do not know why. My main concern is my physical fitness. I am unable to exercise and run and do track because of this.

Doing some research I read about something called a Laryngeal Spasm or w/e where the Larnyx is damaged and during the spasms it sorta reacts to if the body was drowning and mentioned about the gagging feeling. Besides that I couldn't find much else that related to my symptom. It is caused by LPR but I am not too sure if this could be it. Anyone knows about this can you please telll me about it and if it connects to my symptom?

I had originally thought the acid going into my throat may cause this but I don't think thats even possible. When I get this feeling my stomach tends to be a little restless. As I've said I have taking some medications for GERD and have not found relief of this particular symptom.

The main culprit I believe is causing this is Post nasal drip. Doing a lot of reading about this, LPR causes excessive PND and when the mucous goes into the stomach it makes LPR a lot worse. It is sort of like a cycle. Since I have constant non stop post nasal drip every day maybe that has done something to my stomach? When I get that gaggy nauseous feeling, I can feel the post nasal drip going down and every few minutes I unconciounsly swallow the mucous. A few times I've noticed as soon as I did that I get the feeling but I am still not too sure on this. Basically it feels like the mucous hitting the back of my tongue causing the gag reflex but then again it feels like its the top of the throat right behind the tongue (dunno what its called) that seems to be shallowing off or something, its hard to describe. I have never really come across anyone who mentioned the same symptom as I do. Most of the time they talk about mucous "Stuck" in the throat that makes them gag as they try to cough it up but I don't really have that.

Like I said it's at its worse when I run or exercise. I cannot even run a mile without having to stop and walk and "control the feeling". (by the way i am not obese).

I have to go back to my ENT soon and I am trying to gather as much info as I can so I can perfectly explain this and try to get him to understand and seek a solution, seeing how he shrugged it off as an "over active gag reflex"
What could this possibly be? PND, LPR, spasm in the throat?

Please, is there anyone who knows about this kind of thing that can help me out here. I am at my wits and I do not knwo what to do now.

Yep. Been there done that. It is a miserable feeling and has made my quality of life suck. I use nasal irrigations when all that white frothy crap nearly chokes me. Mix little baking soda and salt water then sniff it up my nose to try and clear goop out. I get sooo much saliva when I work outside a lot. Try chewing gum, which helps and of course if you can keep it down, water, water, water. Something warm might help to like warm tea.

sometimes even chewing gum makes it worse but not all the time. I don't knwo why.

To tell you the truth, no matter how much water I drink this problem isn't going to go away completely. I know it will help with the mucous and maybe the post nasal drip but there has to be SOMETHING wrong in my throat that makes it sensitive to post nasal drip or something else.

Anyone know anything? Please I really need some info so I can get this fixed when I go to the docs again.

I agree with you 100%. I feel the same way. "Something" is just not working right. Period. What, I haven't figurered it out yet and no
Dr. has given me a reason that makes good sense. I don't have the gag thing too often (thank God) but like you, I took allergy shots for years and last testing was good. I'm not sure I reflux acid all the time because I don't have the burning feelng all the time. You can reflux non-acid material but "what" is the reason for this and "what" can be fixed to stop it. I do think something has to be done other than all the norm tips and suggestions. What might help one doesn't mean it will the next. Very frustrating and hope someone can give you some solid advice.

well someone from the allergy board told me about some nasal spray that is supposed to almost totally stop mucous production so I am gonna try that out.

Hi. Unfortunately, I can't help you directly, but I was surprised to see such a post appear right when I'm trying to seek help too.

I'm having this hyperactive gag reflex problem (meaning, it is just THERE; no "trigger" necessary as most people talk about). But I think my story is a bit different from you. I'm 38 now.

1st, I've always been a sinus sufferer. My dad is that way big time, and I guess it's mostly genetic that I simply have sinuses that are constantly full. Plus, I have some allergies to grass and pollen (gained as a teen). I'm very used to it and mostly it doesn't bug me. I'd not say it's severe, but it is ever-present.

2nd, I got alleged GERD/LPR and gastroparesis about 1.5 years ago. I suspect it may have been drug-related (not sure - was on antibiotics for skin for years, and massive doses of ibuprofen for 6 mos for a major butt pain, and BC pills for a year, exactly), but not sure if I ruined myself permanently or not. Even off of PPIs (to get pregnant) and the other drugs, I suffered bad burning sensations inside my stomach and lower gut.

3rd, I am now pregnant, at 16 weeks.

I started a constant gag feeling at maybe 6 weeks pregnant.

So, since I've never yet heard/read of anyone having "gag" problems related to GERD or other GI issues (I've been reading both medical stuff and personal fora like this almost since I started GI problems), and occasional references to it in pregnancy info (but not a whole lot!), I am hopeful it's "temporary".

But I still have a big fear it is yet another twist to my GI journey, and is permanent! Because a couple months before pregnancy, and still during the early part, I had that burning problem - obviously not pregnancy - then I morphed to some nausea (prego) and this confounded gag reflex.

It's constant, every day, and all day, and can happen any time. I do have periods where it feels worse and more sensitive than others - sometimes turning my neck to look for rear traffic will trigger a heave! I have silent burps with GERD that I also now associate with the gagging - every "burp" aggravates the reflex, no matter how sensitive or not I'm feeling.

In addition to the throat-tightening I feel when it's real bad, I often have the "reflex" feeling IN MY STOMACH. It's not like flu, and not necessarily nauseous - it's just like a trigger is being tickled, alot like the throat usually is!

Do you have any of that feeling right in the stomach, or just the throat?

LOL wish I could tell you! As I said, it's sort of like a tickling in the stomach - maybe at or near the LES junction. It's not really "nauseous", or "burn", or "flu-like" - totally foreign feeling to me, but sometimes sort of like impending gas bubble that is tickling at the top. But not simply "gas" (which I know WELL, LOL).

well I do get a lot of feelings in my stomach even sort of how you describe it. I have noticed that SOMETIMES when I get that feeling in my throat my stomach feels weird a little but my assumption is, if its post nasal drip thats bothering my gag, its probably irritating my stomach as it goes down.

Re: Nausea/gag/vomiting/retch feeling that I cannot control!!!!!

    To KyleG:

Wow. I thought I was the only person in the world who had almost these exact symptoms. However, my gagging is grossly aggravated by anxiety. My gag reflex is active almost 24/7 and the only way I can stop it is to be chewing on, and swallowing small pieces of food (I usually use something small that I can take with me like almonds). Gum chewing only works for a second as something about the texture causes me to start gagging after a minute or two of chewing. Sucking on mints sometimes helps.

I have been to quite a few doctors as a child and found that I had moderate allergies to just about everything on the planet and lots of post nasal drip. However, the doctors haven't been able to come up with a treatment that has helped me. I have been dealing with this issue since I was in elementary school and I have found ways to cope (almonds, anti-anxiety meds), but they don't fix the problem, they just 'distract' my gag reflex temporarily.

About 2 years ago, I started getting the feeling of a 'lump' in my throat that worsened my symptoms so bad that some days the almonds couldn't distract my gag reflex enough so I began to gag and vomit uncontrollably (I'm sorry, I know that's gross). I went to the doctor and, after a nasal scope (THAT was a terrible experience for someone with a hyperactive gag reflex!!!), I was diagnosed with mild reflux. I do not get any of the 'typical' heartburn symptoms but my doctor said that many people can have reflux without heartburn.

Since then I have tried EVERY known remedy (drug/herb/etc.) to get rid of the reflux but it persists. I was put under and had a esophageal scope done, and everything appears to be physically fine! The specialist who performed the procedure said it was almost "all in my head" and related to my anxiety. He recommended going on some anti-anxiety meds and seeing a therapist (which I do now). I still have some odd feelings in my gut though, so I don't think it's all in my head.

For the last 3 weeks or so I have been on an anti-anxiety med, and my reflux doesn't seem to be as bad. I'm not sure if that's related or not. The gag reflex is just as bad as ever though. I'm pretty sure the reflux I am having is still irritating it and I'm dealing with some extra anxiety at the moment to compound on that.

I know anxiety may not factor in to your symptoms, but I would love to know if you find anything that gives you relief. I believe if I can get the physical side under better control, I won't be as anxious. I hope you check this thread even though it's over a month old. I rarely post things online, but I was encouraged to see that I wasn't the only one dealing with these issues. My life is dominated by my gag reflex / acid reflux right now and I'm sick of it! Any relief I can get at this point I consider a miracle.

I'm sorry to be long-winded and dump all of this here, but I put up with this 24/7/365 and I guess I just need to vent a bit, lol.

I hope you get some relief, and again, if you find anything that helps you I would love to know about it!

    God Bless!

Ya havent been in this thread in a while but I went to a doctor in phillu a few days ago and she is going to run me through some tests to determine if I have reflux. She was not sure about my gagging problem though and suggested I had a very hyperactive gag reflex.

Re: Nausea/gag/vomiting/retch feeling that I cannot control!!!!!

I just read all of this and thought i would share my story. I am 20 years old right now, Just before i turned 18 in the begining of my senior year i started to always feel sick, the "leaning over the toilet about to throw up feeling" no matter what i ate or drank. All day, it never went away. I have had severe acid reflux since i was born and was diagnosed with gerd as well as a faulty pyloric valve, the flap of skin the closes after food passes from your esophogus into your stomach.

Anyways it got to the point where i was throwing up 60 70 times a day, everything in my stomach was gone and i would uncontrollably dry heave for hours on end. I was unable to take a small bite of food or a sip of any drink, it would just come right back up. I went 9 days without eating anything more than a couple of popsicles that barely went down and i eventually puked back up.

My mom finally decided to take me to the emergency room, where they gave me Reglan, a prescription drug used to help stop severe vomiting. If any of you are familiar with Reglan you know it is not in the least bit a fun drug to be on. It attacks your nervous system and leaves you with an uncotrollable, on edge, total wacked out feeling. You get so anxious about nothing, you cant think yo yourself, it makes you jump out of your own skin. after one 10 mg pill you feel the effects quite a bit. I was taking 4 a day and was unable to drive and had blurred vision, and just a crazy messed with type of feeling.

The severe vomiting never went away, i went back to the hospital and had every stomach test known to man, fiberoptic scan, endoscopy, gerds testing, ct scans, MRI's, chest x-rays, gastric emptying test, radioactive bypass tests and who knows what else. All of them came up with no answerss as to why i was having such severe symptons that could not be stopped or slowed.

After the 1st month i dropped an amazing amount of weight, i went from 203 lbs to 137 in just over a month. I lost all energy, i could barely stay awake and walk around to just live life. Months went by before i found a book, a biography written by a college student with the same symptoms. After reading the first 5 pages in aw that someone else in the world had these problems and i wasnt alone i skipped directly to the back that gave the answer of how he solved his problems. He took a combination of omeprazole, reglan, and natural stomach supplements like acidofoulus.

I started on that same pill program and after about 3 more months i was back to gaining weight and eating food again. It took just about a year for my stomach to be back to as normal as possible.

Unfortunately i had to stop taking reglan due to severe parkinsins like symptoms and involuntary muscle movement, even paralysis that reglan can cause. My stomach has gone back to its old problem ways but not completely. I can still eat food but not alot and i am completely unable to go out partying and drinking. Out of no where all day i feel really nautious and gagged. My only way to fight it off is to chew gum, i did it when i first started getting problems and it helps to take my mind off my stomach.

Please post more stuff, are there any sure solutions to this problem??

    KYLE G!!

I have the same gag reflex you talked about, like i said down below it got worse when i played sports and ran. i stopped me from being able to play football because i always felt like puking and would gag while i was playing.

Doctors all seem to shrug it off as some simple thing that can be taken care of, and never take time and dig deep to find any answers. I am sitting here right now feeling like there is a finger in my throat choking my as i type this. Let me know if you have found out anything yet about it.

i use a tiny amount of an enzyme (not the whole capsule) called mullzyme. It clears out mucus. One needs mucus in the body but excess is not good. It s. It is very effective for me.
