Unhappy Acid Reflux/GERD

Have been on Nexium for around 2 years. It has been great, however after a recent bout of Atrial Fibrillation and taking Aspirin & Verapamil for 3 weeks the Nexium no longer works and burning like a blow torch inside, with bad chest pain (it's not my heart). I have stopped both Aspirin & Verapamil as they are intolerable. I am eating very small amounts of food, never drink coke or other carbonated drinks & I quit coffee over a month ago (what a joke I only had 1 - 2 cups with half teaspoon of coffee anyway). Is this something that others have experienced and if so does changing PPI's work? I'm making an assumption that the body must adjust to the particular medicine in the particular PPI. Any suggestions? Feeling very down and can't function at the moment the way I am.

Re: Acid Reflux/GERD

Hello: Sorry to hear you are having such problems. Did you take the Nexium together with the aspirin and Verapamil? When you take a PPI like Nexium you have to take it alone with no other medicines. If you have to take another type of medicine i.e. the aspirin/Verapamil you are supposed to wait 2 hours after you have taken the Nexium to take them (hope this makes sense). If you take the PPI together with other medication you lose efficacy the same as taking them with food. With Nexium you have to wait one hour before you can eat. I know this information to be true because I did read the insert that accompanies the Nexium bottle and all of this is explained. Good luck.....

Re: Acid Reflux/GERD

Hi Duchess3,
I always make sure I take Nexium a minimum pf 1 hour before other meds. Would always make sure I took these medications (Aspirin & Verapamil) after a good size meal - it didn't do any good. I have now discovered buffered Aspirin & even in suppository form can still effect your stomach lining. People with Relux etc should be very careful. My heart specialist knew I have GERD but still put me on a large doese of Aspirin - I'm very cranky! I've learnt a lot now from the internet unfortunately it doesn't help me after the event.
