    Had Endoscopy this morning

The procedure wasn't bad. I was pretty well out of it and besides a little gas for a few hours I felt fine after. The good news is he saw no damage to my esophagus. But the lower part of my stomach has significant tissue damage and he wants me to go on meds.

This is a little different than anything I've read about. I thought that the stomach was protected from acid but he claims my stomach must produce acid even when there is no food and thats what is damaging the lining in the lower area of the stomach. He showed me the pics and the lining looks like it has pock marks simular to the scaring left after having acne. He claimed that left untreated this would develope into stomach cancer within 10 years.

He does not believe this is the cause of my cronic upper back problems. But would explain the upper abdominal pain that I've had. I'm not crazy about the idea of using the meds but I guess I'll try them for a month or two and see how everything goes.

Sometimes there's no choice and one must go on the meds. I went from never needing any to having to take 8 very potent drugs. They can be real life savers. I wonder what they do to my stomach though. I also take aspirin, and hope it doesn't damage the stomach lining. I know some of the others can eventually. I haven't had the scope done yet, just the barium tests. I wonder if I should at this time, or should I wait because of the meds? Glad you had yours done, Red. Now you can start your treatment. Do you also have nausea? Just wondering if it is a GERD symptom or not. Thanks for sharing!

The doctor did say that nausea would be a very common symptom of this type of condition. He also said that it took many years for this type of damage to occure. After thinking about it I probably have had nausea for so long that I just figured it was normal. I've always had what I called a nervous stomach. I probably should have had all of this check out years ago instead of waiting untill it got so bad that I had a difficult time dealing with it. I'm glad to finally know what's going on and even though I'm not much of a fan of the PPIs I will give them a shot and see if I can get the stomach healed up.

Good luck with that! I think the PPIs are helping with the nausea. I've had constant nausea forever, it seems. So I know the feeling....I don't wake up with it now. It comes & goes.

    Re: Had Endoscopy this morning

I've had nausea and loss of appetite for about a week and a half. If you read my other posts I went to my family doctor, my GI, and the ER in less than two weeks because I was nervous about it and none of them are that concerned that it is anything serious, what I have been told is this is probably acid reflux/GERD. I only had blood work and chest and stomach x-rays done so far. It upsets me because I feel horrible and neither one of them really wanted to much except give me Protonix and have me wait a month. It frustrating cause I get hunger pains but cant eat. The good news is my symptoms of lump in throat and burping up food has decreased so far. Just wanted to let you know I understand how you and everyone feels.

    Hi all,

I have GERD, hiatal hernia and IBS. No fun!

What kind of meds did the Dr. prescribe?

I have trouble with the PPIs as they give me gas and cramps.

    Hi Chantal,

My prescriptions have changed a few times already.

    Currently:
Nexium, twice per day. Once before breakfast and once before dinner.
    Zantac (300mg) once before bedtime.
Gaviscon liquid as needed (I carry it everywhere!)

    Re: Had Endoscopy this morning

He has prescribed 20mg omeprazole twice a day. I have an appointment in 3 weeks and we will then discuss if the dosage or type of PPI needs to be changed. My understanding is that Omeprazole is the generic form of Prilosec and is the least expensive of the PPIs. It has to be tried first and shown to be uneffective or untolerated before the insurance will cover the cost of the more expensive PPIs. It's just like everything else anymore. You have to play the GAME and jump thru all the hoops to advance to the next step. I think you face the same types of challenges and hoops getting the endoscopy procedure approved.

The medical proccess I experience was very much like yours. I only took the Protonix for about 10 days because it seemed to make me feel even worse. After I was in the doctors office for the same symptoms 3 or 4 more times they finally ordered an upper GI barium series. That looked fine so the basicly blew me off for next few visits. Then the doctor though I had an abdominal hernia and scheduled me for surgery. There was no hernia just a lump of fat so they basicly cut on me for nothing. After that I started looking for a new doctor. During my first visit the he set me up with the Endoscopy.

The present thinking in the medical community is that the most efficient way to diagnos GERDS is to use PPIs for 30 days and see if the condition improves. If you improve you have GERDS and will need to continue to take PPI medication for the rest of your life. "Case Closed" no further action required. If you don't improve maybe it will take another month or two. I remember reading an interview that was with a very prominent doctor and that is basicly what he said.

What exactly were your symptoms? How long did they last? I have a endoscopy scheduled for next Friday, but I think I am rushing it since I have only been on the meds for 7 days. Everyone says its stress and Im making it worse and Im making myself sick. I would just hate to schedule a procedure and have nothing wrong with me. Did your doctor say anything about the side effects of Protonix?

    serenity,

is Gaviscon an OTC med? I was told by the specialist to get a specific OTC drug and use it before any activity. I forgot its name. I guess any one of these products will do. It's mostly to help with the SOB (don't ask me HOW!) I wonder how much good these products might do to me, compared to any possible damage resulting from their long-term use. I might be better off not taking it at all for my breathing. I was also given asthma meds, which I don't want to take (my SOB is not from asthma). I need to get something though and keep it with me, just in case.

Have had a lot of different syptoms. The most regular sypmtom was upper abdominal pain. The pain feels kinda like the pain you get when you've had the air knocked out of you. Located in the center just below the area where your sternum. I also have a lot of upper back pain between the shoulder blades. I've had very severe pain that went all the way thru from the front of the chest to my back. That has only happened a few times and only lasted for a few days thank God. Felt like I had a spear or an arrow running thru me.

Stress can be a big part of it I think. I sometimes go for a month or two feeling pretty decent and it always seems like some kind of drama with my son kicks it off. If you have teenagers then you probably know what I'm talking about. That whole situation is getting much better now.

Get the scope done. Hopefully you will realize exactly what your worried about. They find nothing and you feel silly for getting the test. Best Case in my opinion. You at least now have a base line so if something happens in the future you know how long it has been going on. If there is some damage then you catch it early before it become serious. \

    Good Luck..........Red

    Hi flowergirl,

Yes, Gaviscon is OTC. It is a liquid antacid. Was the one you were told to get an antacid medication? If so, I would have to say Gaviscon is the best from all the other OTC liquid antacids as it works quickly and lasts longer than most.
Although breathing difficulties do happen with reflux, am not sure that is the case with you? Even though Gaviscon is not likely to cause you damage and might be worth trying to see if it would help please be careful how you self medicate. (especially if you have asthma..?) Good luck.
