Can GERD cause...

fatigue after a meal? When I eat I tend to get slight pains in my chest/upper abdomen--I find cheese especially intolerable. I also get slight pains in my shoulder and shoulder blade--all this is only when I eat. I also get a little nauseous.

I am 23 y/o and recently had all kinds of heart tests (stress, multiple EKG's, chest x-ray and cardiac enzymes) and I also had a CT scan of the abdomen with contrast--all good. I figure it's not my heart, so...

Thanks in advance.

Re: Can GERD cause...

Pain in the vicinity of the shoulder blades or under the sternum
are common GERD symptoms. Fatty, greasy and/or spicy foods are the
common triggers for most people but it varies a lot from person to person.

You might start by trying a low-dosage acid reducer (like Zantac 75)
before a meal that you'd expect to cause this sort of problem. If that
helps, then that suggests GERD. If so, because your symptoms are mild, you'll
probably want to try avoiding the problem foods rather than relying
on drugs because long-term usage of acid reducers can cause other problems,
as many people on this list can attest to.

Mark.

Re: Can GERD cause...

Thank you--I'm still confused, however, as to whether or not fatigue is a symptom of GERD. It's like a WAVE of fatigue a few minutes after eating.

Re: Can GERD cause...

I'm by far no expert, but have you been checked for diabetes?

Just my first thought when I read your post.

Re: Can GERD cause...

My GF is diabetic and I recently did blood tests--it's not diabetes.

Re: Can GERD cause...

Also, being fatigued is one of the multitude of symptoms I feel--diabetes does not cause shoulder blade pain, slight chest pain and feeling of something coming up in your throat/nausea.

Re: Can GERD cause...

It was just a suggestion. I haven't read anything about GERD causing fatigue, but that doesn't mean it couldn't...again, I'm not an expert. The other symptoms sound like GERD, but just thought maybe you had more than one thing going on. Anyway, it's good to know you don't have it.

Re: Can GERD cause...

I haven't heard about GERD causing fatigue either, but the rest of the
symptoms do sound like GERD. I think it's worth trying a low-dose
over-the-counter acid reducer like Zantac 75 as an experiment.

Really, mealtime related fatigue sounds like a pancreas issue.
But, if you've had your glucose measured, you can probably rule out
diabetes or hypoglycemia.
