    Gerd again.

I have had Gerd on and off since I have been 18. Over the last month, it has been bad. It started a couple days after my grandfather's funeral. The stress of that even was horrible. Short of breath was the first sign followed by indigestion and burping.

When the Gerd is bad, I have extreme shortness of breath, and I feel huffy. I know there is a strong connection between trouble breathing and Gerd, but I do not understand the dynamic exactly?

Can anyone explain why you are short of breath with reflux?

Are there many others out there who also have this as a symtom?

I am on nexium almost 2 weeks now, not much difference.

    Re: Gerd again.

    Hi Teacup,

With GERD, the esophageal sphincter does not close properly and stomach acids end up in your esophagus. This causes inflammation which can (and often does) result in shortness of breath. Of course there are also complications caused by GERD/LPR which can result in bronchial and lung problems which would of course cause the shortness of breath. The lungs are very sensitive to acid so it can happen easily.

But in having extreme shortness of breath and huffing and puffing as you say you have then you really should go to a doctor for an evaluation. Maybe you have asthma or allergies which are being exasperated by GERD or maybe it is something entirely different.

    Feel better soon!

Thank you for your reply. The good thing is that the meds have started to work, and the shortness of breath has subsided to some extent.
