I've had stomach/throat/digestive problems for 25 years so I hope this helps

    Hello everyone,
this post is going to be long so hang tight. First...a breif history...when I was 16 I developed a bad cold which I did not go to the doctor for...after a couple of weeks most of the symptoms went away except I had long bouts (sometimes weeks when I could not smell or taste anything) and I had this feeling of having a lump or "ball" of mucus in the back of my throat. I had surgery twice (which only lined the pockets of the "doctor" who cut me up.....I had other doctors look at my sinuses after only to have them shake their heads). Jump ahead 3 years...I get a really bad flu and am throwing up for a full week (I know...I know ...I should have went to the hospital). After that week my temp went down and I felt better but I had had heart burn/ nausea/bloating and that damned lump in the back of my throat. I also starting getting these really smelly white slivers that I would cough up. I went back to the doctor and he told me that I needed to have my tonsils out so back to the hospital I went (it did get rid of the smelly bits but I still had all the other problems). After 10 years! of going from one specialist to another the only thing they could agree on was that I had I.B.S. (thats doctor talk for "I don't know whats wrong with you". So...here is what I have tried and think might help some of you.
-start a daily food diary...not just what food you eat but where you buy it and keep the ingrediants if its pre-made (I found I could eat pizza from one place but not another...I also found out that I cant eat M.S.G or a bunch of preservatives. I can eat cooked green peppers but not raw...you get the idea....its a real pain in butt...but trust me after years your sanity is more important.
    - Try lactose free milk and dont drink it close to bed time (it just makes that mucus worse ( I stopped drinking milk for about 5 years before I realized that I could drink small amounts of lactose free ...but just during the day)
    - Try going without "any" and I mean any bread/wheat/glucose for a couple of weeks (and yes that includes beer)....and if you feel better try introducing a very very basic bread and see what happens.
    - Sometimes that mucus in the back of my throat would get so bad I would start gagging and having the dry heaves ( I didn't always feel sick but my throat would get so tight that I could not swallow and it just triggered the gag reflex ) so I started carrying around a water bottle and sipped on it to relax the throat muscles.
    - This one was a biggy for me.....stop smoking!!!!! after about the 10th doctor I finally found one that explained to me that some people develop allergies to smokes (this was the hardest thing for me because I had smoked for 17 years ....pack a day) but after a couple of months of no beer and no smokes I felt so much better......if I can, trust me so can you.
    - I tried all of the meds that they gave to me but for me nothing worked. I went for all the tests: cameras everywhere! drinking the liquid chalk, x-rays, ultrasounds...the works. I still think its important to do all those things just to make sure its nothing serious... do it now because these things can become chronic but do not give up.
    - one last thing that also helped me was reading some books on relaxing/breathing skills...I've always been alittle uptight and never believed in that stuff but trust me...it helps. Oh ya...the very last thing and this one might sound crazy but it helped me when I started feeling sick to my stomach was to sit in a chair and twist my body to the left and hold for about 5 min....I would always hear a gurgling and then the nausea would go away. I have no idea why this helped me but after about the 5th year of not being able to sleep I started trying some really weird things out of desperation. Well there it is folks....if I remember anything else and I'm sure I will, I will update this thread....good luck to everyone and remember that something will help you..you just got to find it. Oh and please dont spell check this.....its late and I just took a gravol...night.

Being your first, and maybe your only post here, thanks for sharing your experience.

One thing that you touched on, in the "weird section" might just be something of import, at least I've noticed it for myself.

    Going on 3yrs for me.

My pressure/pain in the chest, which the dr's say is GERD, goes away when that "gurgling" happens to me. I usually accomplish the gurgle by not eating, or eating very very little at least a couple times a week. My Dr is really happy I'm losing the weight, but not eating just to feel better, can't be all that good for me. I'll start trying your technique to see if it helps.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply,

The first time I had the pressure/pain in the chest it was so intense that I was taken to the hospital because they thought that I was having a heart attack, it scared me so bad that I ate very little for a month and lost 30 lbs. Over time I realized that it was not that I was eating but what I was eating. Things like rice, cheese, some breads, red meat (in steak form....hamburger seems ok) and other "binding" foods still cause the pain so I try to avoid them. Also try to graze (eating a bunch of small meals throughout the day instead of the regular 3 big meals) that really helped me. I just posted a thread about peppermint oil...read up on it before you try it, it sounds iffy.....have you tried it? Good luck in the future and stay on the thread....someone is always going to help someone else....it's human nature.
    cheers.
