    Acid Regurgitation and Fundoplication Surgery

I had Nissen Fundoplication surgery a year ago 11/08 and still continue to have acid reflux and regurgitation. The surgeon sold me on it stating that 90%of post-op patients are able to discontinue antacids, and become free of heartburn symptoms and acid reflux. Since the surgery, I have continued to have reflux and had to switch GI specialists due to incomepetence. The second GI specialist diagnosed me with Bile Reflux post-op. As a result, I am now on additional medication for this newly developed condition. It has been my experience having acid along with bile reflux is a miserable condition. It is lucrative for a surgeon to recommend this type of procedure and charge your insurance $16,000 for it (in my case) just like recommending patients have their gallbladder removed - so once again they can get paid for it and get away with it. I cannot say I would recommend Fundoplication surgery and always get a second opinion when any doctor starts recommending to remove one's gallbladder. Removing one's gallbladder often causes Bile Reflux!

I had a Nissen in 1995. I am presently on Kapidex 60 mg, and Zantac 300mg daily. That surgery is nowhere near a 90 % success rate. It also did not improve my reflux as well as in your case. Greg

I had the same surgery and only had relief for 2 months. I wish I hadn't bothered going through all those awful tests and the surgery. I've been taking Prilosec OTC and thankfully it usually works for me.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through so much.

I had a Nissen Fundoplication 10/08. I had instant relief. I never went off of my PPI's though. I was on twice a day Prevacid Solutabs until I switched to the Kapidex I'm currently on.

I live in fear that the procedure will stop working though. My reflux caused me really serious breathing problems.
