Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

Hi, I had all that for years, the food sticking and horrible heartburn, I am a 58 year old female. Finally after the bravo capsule (with a very high score in the 50's)and esophago gastro thingie plus a hida scan my gallbladder was removed and also a Paraesophageal hernia was repaired. It was done by laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. This was July 23, 2009 and was supposed to last 15 years and now it has to be redone after less than five months. November 20th 2009 it all came back; I have the same heartburn and same food sticking as before. He said he did a floppy wrap and thinks it is undone. I have to do a barium swallow on January 6th, 2010 and after that see what will happen, open fundoplication or just fix the one that is there, tighten it. I hate the fact it has to be done again. I was supposed to be in one night and ended up four days as I developed pnemonia after the hernia was pulled down past the lungs. Wondered about the barium swallow. What does that entail. I heard thick chalky drink. Did you lay down or stand, did you only drink one cup, by straw or swallow from cup. Did you have to eat anything as well, how long it took etc. Thanks.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

thanks everyone for your replies I really wish you a lot of health in 2010 and that we all cure soon!

I just wanted to update you all, I'm still having trouble swallowing and there are days that are hellish for me. It came to a point where I have to crumble my AD's again, cause when I swallow them and even though I chew them in tiny bits one bit will get stuck on the right side. =/ I got my friends and family and relatives telling me I lost so many pounds and it makes me feel uncomfortable when I know I can't help it, tho I really am trying to eat as much as I can.

However, I'm down on Esomeprazol still, but I'm not taking it 3 days already, cause I asked my doc if I could have gastroscopy done, cause she said if it doesn't get better with swallowing and food stucking that I should come back and the last thing we'll try is gastroscopy..I have it on Tuesday..I really hope after that it'll be a bit better, cause when they put this tube in your throat I guess it streches it, right, so maybe we all need something like this that food will stop sticking to either sides?

I'll be updating you how it went and if it is (hopefully) getting better after I'll have it done.

I am glad to see other suffer, but it sucks. They recently said I have some pre cancerous bacteria growing in my stomach and I will have this treated some ploracopter or something. I will let you know how that goes.

Hi! I'm sorry to hear about your problems returning again, but as I say to everyone, be strong, we are with you!

regarding barium swallow, yes it's a thich chalky drink you get to drink. It consists of barium sulfate which when you swallow it helps to show a doc on xrays if there are any abnormalities. You stand on this machine and drink about 5 sips of it by doctor instructing you when to swallow it. No straw there, you drink from a cup.
Nope, you don't have to eat anything. That's all you have to do, a few swallows, they look on their monitors while you swallow and that's it. After a few days you get results home by mail or to your doctor if ordered so.

No, I had to sign an addendum to have my throat "stretched" I am sure this is a medical term for it, but the doctor just said they have been having success with "stretching" the throat. I feel 98% better, I can still feel some tightness, but I cannot tell you how this has increased my quality of life!!!

I am going back in in a few weeks, I have some precancerous bacteria in my stomach they are going to deal with and I will ask them then.

hmm I did get some paper to sign, but it says it's for an agreement that I was informed about how the process goes and about any bad side effects..I don't know if that's the same thing?

I'll ask docs tomorrow before I have it done about stretching and will see what they'll say.

I wish both of us well and keep us updated please!

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

survived my gastro..still having painful throat..I felt I had some piece of bread from the previous day stuck there and I told that the doc before he put endoscope in my esophagus and I have no idea what he was doing, but right there where I felt food stuck before it hurts me now really badly when I swallow. Why would that hurt me, anyone has any idea? I asked the doc if there was anything there, but he said no..I don't know how he can say that if I felt someting is there? his only answer was that my throat is inflamed and that I have a 'feeling' of food sticking there..I don't get it how it's a feeling for him if I actually feel it there when I swallow and when it gets stuck? I also asked about stretching and the nurse there said this is done only when throat is really inflamed and that in my case this isn't necessary (?) however I got the result which is mild erythematous antral gastritis. what does this mean? other than that all the other things are in normal state, no h. pylori, no nothing.. and the doc said I should be taking Esomeprazole for one more month and later I should be treated with antacids if needed. that's his diagnosis, but I still didn't find out why the food is getting suck on the right side
I have no idea what my doc will pu me on now when I take my results to her..probably she'll say the same..take Esomeprazol for on more month and then we'll see, but what can I still do? I don't want this stupid food getting stuck in my throat, cause I can't continue like that, cause I'm losing too much weight, cause I'm not eating properly..what do you guys suggest?

I don't wanna be like that forever, I just wanna finally eat normal! Geez, I'm only 20 and have to go through such a bad disease.

sorry for rambling, but I really feel bad right now and my throat hurts so bad and had to vent this out.

Hello, xx. I don't have time right now to read previous posts to see how long you've been dealing with this - how long have you had this feeling of something being stuck in your throat? I just popped in with a word of hope and encouragement - this will almost assuredly not last forever or be a permanent condition. If you have been scoped and the doctor assures you there is nothing there, there quite likely is nothing stuck there - which is not to say that you're imagining your discomfort. I had this feeling of something in my throat for several months, but it DID go away and so did the chest pain I was having. It took time and careful attention to what I was eating, how I was eating, when I was eating, and regular medication, but I am starting to feel much, much better and trust that you will, too. Your GI report sounds like very good news and hopefully your body will "right itself" soon.

xx... I have had my throat stretched... and some of the same symptons. If your esophagus is raw, enflamed etc... that can cause the feeling of food being stuck. You need to very carefully allow it to heal! Here is what WORKED for me. I ate soft foods for two - three weeks...such as.. oatmeal, egg beaters with cottage cheese, soups, mashed potatoes, cooked or steamed veggies, small and I mean small pieces of fish, meat, poultry. I also started drinking 2 oz. of aloe vera juice twice a day. Tea with honey... these two helped cure and heal my irritated and inflamed esophagus.

You will be alright...no chips, nothing to scratch your esophagus for months!!!
    You can do it...

thank you very much both of you guys for your reply and comfort, I really appreciate it.

@Tom You had your throat streched during your gastro or were you sent there specifically to have your throat streched? What were your problems like that doc suggested throat stretching? cause as I said when I asked gastrologist about it he said only hugely inflamed throat gets to be stretched and that mine isn't THAT MUCH inflamed.

Thank you for your diet suggeestion, but believe me, I'm eating only puddings and probiotic drinks for 2 months already and it's not any better..I only started to eat bread again after 2 months 2 weeks ago, so I don't know how my throat can still be so inflamed..I'm taking my meds, but my doc prescribed for me to take them before sleep, cause she says at night when you sleep acid is at worst..but maybe that's the problem? when I gor my results from yesterday's gastro he wrote there I should be taking Esomeprazol at morning for about one more month..so maybe because I was taking it in the evening it doesn't have much effect on me? I took it in the afternoon today and will try to take it in the morning now and will see if there are any differences.
However about those foods you suggested, I tried to eat beaten eggs about a week ago and they got stuck in my throat..a piece of it..and I really tried to chew as much as I could. From fish I only tried this italian food rio mare and I could eat that and poultry I could get down too.

About aole vera juice, does it have to be any specific brand or any aloe vera juice? and tea with honey, what tea are you drinking with it? cause I'm not allowed to drink any fruit tea's, cause my doc said they're bad for reflux, so I'm stuck with hip's tea for now. From time to time too I drink raspberry's syrup juice, can I drink that?

@all when are you guys taking your meds anyway?

no chips you say? you know I actually managed to get 2 portions of it down without sticking feeling today, so maybe/hopefully after all my gastro has helped anyway and somehow 'stretched' my throat, tho I still feel pain where I felt food stuck yesterday..however, will report in a few days too how's going with my eating.

@all is anyone here who after gastro could eat more normally, if you felt your food sticking before?

@abby I have this feeling now that food gets stuck on my right side for about a month and a half now..thank you for your encouraging words, it means a lot. well I know that it doesn't mean I'm imaging it being there, but you know it's so irritating when you hear it's only a feeling when YOU actually feel it there..I have no idea how, but I REALLY feel things there when they stick. It usually happens after a few bites and even though I'm drinking while I'm eating and being careful when swallowing and chewing.
I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and thank you, I REALLY hope you're right and this feeling or whatever it is will go away soon, so I won't have my anxiety jumping up to the roof when it happens.

Re: does anyone with acid reflux get that feeling as well?

just popping in and reporting my state. 6 days after gastro, I still had mild feeling of food getting stuck..I can eat somehow solids slowly now, but today an AD pill again got stuck in the back of my tongue..does anyone have problems with swallowing/stucking pills?

visited my doc today and as I was expecting, she told me to continue using Esomeprazol 40mg. She said I don't really have a reflus, but inflamed stomach? what the hell? I asked her about my swallowing and food sticking and she said it might be just a 'feeling' and she sent me to logoped to have him determine if I'll have to go to phoniater, cause supposedly I'm using my voice wrong and so it's raspy..now I have no idea, but she said after that we'll see what we'll do with my swallowing problem? how can my voice and use have anything to do with my throat and food sticking?

XX.. I am doing so much better now that I have made all the necessary changes.
I eat shop smart, eat smart and have cut out all the "things" that trigger my symptoms! I really do feel so much better. May I ask you one question? As a young lady have you ever had a problem with "purging" yourself or making yourself vomit to stay thin? I know this is a "tough" question but have you? If so you are damaging your esophagal wall or lining.

I'm glad to hear you're doing better, Tom! I too am doing a bit better eating carefully and tyring not to think about it go down when I eat. It helps a little tho I still get food sticking, but a bit less.

Don't worry about the question, I don't mind you asking. As for the answer, nope, I have never had these problems, cause I tend to check into things before I'm about to do something, so I knew very early this is not healthy at all, so I rather replaced it with regular excersise.

I don't have time to read through all of the posts, but i too, suffered from this and had all the tests to find out that my gallbladder was only working at a 12% capacity when it should be working between 35 and 45%. I had it removed and for the first time was able to eat foods that I hadn't been able to in so long and not had that gosh awful pain!!
