My doc said if I'm not feeling better by March 5 he is gonna scope me!! and if he recommends surgery I will do it anything to try and fix this!!! It does not matter what i eat I have not really found any trigger foods I only drink decaf coffee and only a 1/2 a cup in the morning and if I ever have a soda it is sprite!! I could care less about the caffine but I have given up smoking i cant' give up everything at once!!! I read some where I this girl quit smoking and is taking her meds and not having any problems anymore that would be wonderful thats what I'm hoping for!! Re: Silent GERD?

Bentleys: I do hope that your Nexium is working well and that you will continue to feel better. After I started taking Nexium, it took several weeks for my sore throat to heal and for that something-stuck-in-my-throat feeling to go away. Great that you quit smoking - that is certain to improve your overall health. Just a note of caution, my doctor recommended that I not drink any carbonated drinks - which would include Sprite. So, you might consider eliminating Sprite to see if that will help you. Sorry, I have never tried Gaviscon, so I don't know if that helps of not. Best wishes to you.

My throat is always on the left side when it bothers me!!and the days its hardly there I had not changed any eating habits at all that is what is so werid!! The pharmist said i should notice a improvement with in one week so that is what confuses me!!! Did you notice in the beginning that it your symptoms come and go and then just got better from there on out? I just don't know if I should have my doc scope me now or wait til march 5?!! Are you able to eat foods again like chocolate and caffeine and soda now that you have it under control!! talk to you soon thanks again for all your help!!

Re: Silent GERD?

Bentleys - you do realize that March 5th is only 3 weeks away, right? Breathe in...hold...breathe out...CALMMMMMMMMM yourself. :) Give your medication some time to work. It's probably not gonna matter one bit if you wait until March to get scoped, my dear. The more anxious you are about this, the worse your symptoms are going to seem. You need to exercise a little patience and turn your attention to other things. Get off this board and go do something else. LOL

Yeah your probably right its just so frustrating and I have been going through this for on and off for 4 years I just want to feel better Its almost like I'm afraid to eat cause everyone say something different about foods!!! I would think the nexium would be working faster since I was on prilosec first but I guess not!! so thanks for the advice I do need to have more patience I just want a quick fix and it is gonna take time!!! So just keep plugging away I'm not gonna worry about the foods so much watch caffeine and choc and acid food!! thanks I ll let you know what I find out!! Like is said on and off for 4 years but just got a diagonsed in Jan and they did not have me on ppis they had me on Zantac only started ppis end of Jan

Re: Silent GERD?

I apologize...I cannot offer any advice. But I'm feeling quite a few of the things you are. I was actually on my way here to ask some folks if acid reflux can occur without heartburn because I also experience the shortness of breath and needing to yawn to "breathe" deeply, the belching, lack of heartburn, and I also bloat really badly even when I have not eaten. And I often have issues swallowing food because I feel like it's going to get stuck in my throat. I always thought heartburn was sort of the cornerstone of reflux, but I didn't know there was a "silent" type.

The weird thing is all my symptoms showed up at different times. The excess gas/belching started when I was 17, and then the breathing issues began when I was about 19, and I can eat absolutely anything (including jalapeno peppers) and not get heartburn. The swallowing problem started within the last few months.

The breathing issues are most concerning because being unable to breathe is frightening. I've had all manner of testing done...CAT scan, X-ray, blood tests, TSH test, asthma challenge, EKG. But I never would have thought I could possibly have reflux.

Thank you so much for writing this topic. I never knew there could be such a subtle form of GERD and now I want to see if maybe this is the answer to my symptoms that have been making me crazy these last few years.

Re: Silent GERD?

I'm so glad to finally find this board. I've spent so much time researching GERD in the last few weeks that I now know researching GERD can give you more GERD!! But hearing others experiences makes me feel a little less insane. I was diagnosed with GERD toward the end of January after having massive gastric upheaval (so to speak!) AFTER quitting smoking in the beginning of January. I felt the strangest flutter at the top of my stomach (probably my LES letting go!) about a week or two after quitting and immediately started having reflux, burping, constipation. I basically felt like my everything inside was inflamed. It wasn't until a week or so later that I started to get severe esophageal pain and pressure. It was maddening. No shortness of breath, just overwhelming pressure. I was on Prilosec 20 at the time, but I upped it myself to 40. It seemed to help somewhat but still had significant pain, mostly in the esophagus and not the throat so much. I ran out of Prilosec and since I had upped my own prescription, the pharmacy wouldn't refill. I happened to have Nexium around so I started taking that and realized it made the pressure go away but the esophageal pain was still there. Have since raised the head of the bed, given up everything :( including coffee and any soda (initially ginger ale gave me gastric relief, but the stomach symptoms subsided and I read that carbonation in any form was an irritant, so I quit), tomatoes, spices, etc. I also have chronic urticaria (hives) and have off and on for about 2-3 yrs so I am already on singulair, zyrtec & tagamet (H2 blocker). I am interested to know if anyone else has experienced unexplained hives as I've read that doctors now believe urticaria & gastric disorders can be linked. I am set for a scope, but not until March 22 and I've been freaking out so it was good to find this thread to hear I am not alone since most of the medical websites don't talk about what it actually feels like to have your esophagus burned or for how long you might need to take the meds to get any relief.

Re: Silent GERD?

Dont have problems with hives but do have hot throat and sore throat that comes and goes!! Feeling like something is stuck in my throat!! I quit smoking in Jan too good for you It will only do good!! They say nexium take 4 weeks to notice any difference so hang in there!! You should look at the thread what to do by marigolds mucus is on that site and she had some good things to say!! For me it does not matter what I eat I gave up stuff to for weeks made not difference So I eat what I want in moderation!! They said to just eat and the meds will do there job!! It just takes time!! They did say to watch the things you eat in the begining to help get it under control, but you will be able to eat those things again everyone that I have talked to that I know is dealing with this meaning friends or people they know are able to eat the things again just in moderation but I believe there is hope!! I think people do get over this some people may not just depends on how bad it is and if they have other issues!! take care hope this helps some

Please help me

Last Monday night/Tues morning I began having this awful burning in my chest, into my upper back, etc. It scared me so bad, I went to the ER, I thought I was having a heart attack! They did an EKG, cardiac enzymes, Nitro, the whole nine yards. I have SEVERE anxiety as well, they ended up putting me in the step down ICU for observation, my heart never showed anything strange, etc. I had 4 EKG's. All looked well they said.
The doc told me he thought it was something to do with Indigestion, Gastro issue, I went home the next day and felt some burning sensations, etc. He put me on Prilosec, I don't see my Doc until the 3rd of March.
I did fine for a few days and last night the burning spell happened again. It feels like a blow torch in my chest, skin even feels hot. Like I have I drank acid. I have some burning in upper stomach too. I had Esophagitits about 20 yrs ago and had that tube run down my throat, but I can't remember if it felt this bad?
I am so scared I don't have anything come up in my throat or atnything. I wonder if its Angina? It just comes on for no reason, I can be just sitting and it hits me in spells. I feel okay otherwise, but I am scared to death! Does this sound like GERD? Could it cause this much pain and burning??
I just panic so bad when it hits me?

Re: Silent GERD?
I am being treated by my internist for GERD and gastritis: Nexium 40mg, 2 times a day. I DO NOT have any heartburn, just uncomfortable high stomach pain(at bra line), burping, shortness of breath,(yawning, etc) and pain high in abdomen that shoots straight back to my back. Started beginning of Dec after eating a blooming onion(boo). Burped steady for about 3 hours. Started taking Nexium 40mg 2 times a day about 3 weeks ago, was only taking it 1 a day before that. Gaviscon after each meal and before bed helps alot with my breathing. I guess it helps to coat the esophagus. I'm better, but still not 100%. Eat alot of veggies (no onions), and chicken. Have lost 15lbs since this started (the only good thing). Almost afraid to eat.
Anyway, DR wants me to take both Nexium at the same time each day. What about the evenings? That is when I have the most problems. How long do the effects of Nexium last in a day? Should I split it up? Is this Silent Gerd? How long has it taken others to be back to normal, if ever? I'll take any advice. I've learned so much from these boards. Thanks.
Re: Silent GERD?

I've had Gerd for years.
I take prescription Protonix..have tried others but this is best for me.
I think most of my problem is stress!
I do have to watch what I eat..no spicy food or food with lots of gas producers.
I was diagnosed with severe reflux..only once have I had the acid actually come up in my throat and I thought I was on fire!
Thank goodness, that doesn't happen often.
I do get the chest pains and stomach pains.
Since I have been under much stress for months, I think this is my problem right now.

Good luck..it isn't any fun!

Re: Silent GERD?

Hi Crafty124,

I am glad I found someone with the same symptoms I'm having right now. I thought there is something wrong with me. I was diagnosed with GERD about 2 months ago. It went away for 1 1/2 and then it came back last week 2/16/10. I've been having a burning sensation in my upper stomach and no heartburn. For me, it comes in the morning a little after I wake up and comes and goes thru out the day. I am just scared bc there is no more heartburn and I was "diagnosed" with the symptoms of GERD. I have had no actually x-ray or scan of my stomach. I'm pretty sure after reading your post and others that what I have is GERD and it will be with me for a while or forever (i hope not).

Re: Silent GERD?

Hi,
I have been on OTC Prevacid now for about 3 weeks, 30 mg in the morning, and 15 mg before dinner at night, and it is working the best. Kapidex only caused me severe intestinal distress. I only have problems when I sit at the computer too long and the upper discomfort comes back. I could have a hiatal hernia, I guess. I haven't been to a gastro to be officially diagnosed though, just guessing. I also still chew 2 Gaviscon after I eat each meal, and that stops my breathing problems. I will go to a gastro, though, if this regimen doesn't take care of it. It seems that with GERD it is a hit or miss treatment, even with an official diagnosis. You just try to find things that work. A complete lifestyle change as far as food is concerned. It probably doesn't hurt any of us to eat more green veggies and less spices, especially salt. And of course fried foods. Also, try our hardest to reduce STRESS. Best of luck to you.

Re: Silent GERD?

Hello, Dark Stranger,

I did not know about the silent form of GERD until I started to read about it on the internet. The breathing issues bothered me the most, and caused alot of anxiety, which of course doesn't help either. Gaviscon really helps with my breathing because it seems to coat my esophagus so the acid doesn't get into my lungs. That is how I understand that it works. I don't have any swallowing problems, though. This GERD seems like such an individual problem. Best of luck to you.
