    breathless, palpitations and tiredness

    Hi Everyone,

I am new here and have posted this same message on the digestive and anaemia boards. I am at my wits end at how I am feeling and TBH a bit scared too, which is not helping my symptoms.

I had a bout of 'inflammed' stomach about three years ago, it was left undiagnosed but I was given omeprazole which eventually cleared it up. I was having acid reflux, stomach pains, burping, bloating and a burning sensation. Since then I would have the odd bout of heartburn but managed it with antacids. Then just before christmas I got another severe bout. It went on for a few months and i was again prescribed omeprazole. The pain cleared up but it seemed to take longer this time.

I was left with extreme tiredness, breathlessness (even when i'm not excersising) and heart palpatations. These are scaring me very much and my fear is probably making it worse. I'm finding I can't walk as far as I get so tired, and a little dizzy.

I went back to my doctor who did some blood tests and general organ function they all came back normal, apart from my MVC count (B12 and folate) was at the higher end of the scale (98). The doctor also did a general examination and said everything was fine (including feeling my tummy).

He seems to think its all in my head and wanted to prescribe me anti depressants, but I don't feel depressed.

I am anxious about it all, they don't feel like panic attacks (one or more of the symptoms is always in the background).

I am not suffering any pain in my tummy and the acid feeling has all but gone, but i'm just left now feeling so lethargic with little energy. Is this normal for stomach complaints?

    Thankyou for reading.

Hello! Could you answer the following questions for me?
    1. Are you male or female?
    2. How old are you?
    3. How much sleep do you have - on average?
    4. Do these palpatations happen from your heart aorta or lower in your abdomen?
    5. Did you have an ECG, or any other heart test?
    6. How would you describe your diet - lacking in nutrients, balanced, too much fat etc. etc.?
    7. IF you are female when did your mother go through menopause?
    8. IF you are male, have you noticed a bit of growth in your chest, or an enlargement in your hips and throat area?
    9. Do the palpatations also happen while lying down, not exerting yourself? Do they really go crazy if you lay on your back?

I have the same problem: my GERD causes me to become dizzy and unable to walk great lengths as I did before it. I become very scared during my walks. Also, do not accept the anxiety/depression diagnosis: this is a sign of ignorance and incompetance on your doctors part. I have dealt with doctors doing the same thing to me: because they could not find answers to my problems, they diagnosed me with anxiety/psychiatric problems--it is bogus. Too many people passively accept this nonsense.

    Re: breathless, palpatations and tiredness

    Hello,

    Thankyou everyone for your replies.

In response to the questions Dawn I will do my best answer, I am 39 and female. I sleep on average 8-10 hours a night. Sometimes the palps are like a twist right on my sternum, sometimes flutterings in my heart area. They are worse when I lie down and seem to occur mostly after eating, when I need I feel the need to burp constantly. 10 years ago whilst pregnant with my youngest (who was a large baby) I suffered from my first bout of acid (rising) and I also had palpatations for which I had an ECG which came back normal. I have not been tested this time round. My diet is good, I eat mostly organic and cook from scratch with lots vegetables and lean meat. My mother was in her mid to late 40's when she hit the menopause. Palps yes worse when I lie down.

I think that covers it all

Over the last few days it all seems to have settled (no pain in my stomach either), i'm hoping thats another episode out of the way. I have had my thyriod checked as it came back normal in the basic blood test as did other organ functions.

I have however gone back onto the omeprazole (even though my stomach doesnt feel bad) and i'm wondering if the above symptoms are to do with acid seeping upwards (ive read it can go to the sinuses and lungs).

Huge thanks for your reply, I have changed doctors now as I really feel the last one was more interested in 'shutting me up' with anti depressants.

    Dem

    Re: breathless, palpitations and tiredness

I am pretty confident that you are in peri-menopause! A lot of doctors do not recognize the symptoms - and as usual, ignorance prevails! It is NOT about your mental health, it's all to do with hormones! Most doctors only mention menopause, they don't talk about the couple of years before the menses cestation! Some of the symptoms of Peri-menopause are:

Menstrual periods that occur less often and eventually stop

    Heart pounding or racing

    Sleeping problems (insomnia)

Decreased interest in sex, possibly decreased response to sexual stimulation

    Forgetfulness (in some women)

    Headaches

Mood swings including irritability, depression, and anxiety

    Urine leakage

Vaginal dryness and painful sexual intercourse

    Vaginal infections

    Joint aches and pains

    Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)

I first heard of this - after I had the palpitations - shortly after my hysterectomy at 35 years old! It was actual Oprah that had the same symptoms! She was rushed to hospital with irregular heart rate (palpitations) and saw the top cardiologists, and they didn't find anything! So finally she met a doctor who told her she was in perimenopause! it helped me SO much - as I thought I was going to die! I met a lady with 2,000 palpitations a DAY!

When I went to see a cardiologist, and had a monitor attached, I would press everytime I felt the defribulation, then he ran the report and it was found that some of the palpitations were actually from my stomach's aorta! From acid and problems within the area! Once this was explained to me, plus watching Oprah! I started changing my caffeine intake, I also found that It was more severe with lack of sleep - stress hormones cause the heartbeat too! So just know this is NOT in your head! It is about your body changing, your hormones going up and down - just like when you were expecting! The only way is when you get one, is tro breathe through it and know that you are NOT dying! The hospital - where I was taken with the irregular heartbeat - said "Only come back if it happens continually for 5 days or more!!!!!!!" Which was shocking, but also settling as the specialists were not alarmed by it! I also started taking Calcium with Potassium and Magnesium! The Magnesium can settle a irregular heartbeat! Vitamin D and non flushing B's also help with stresses - that you might not be aware of! I hope this helps - also Evening of Primrose Oil and Omega 3, 6,9's, Co Enzyme Q10 and Folic Acid/Biotin! I have very few now adays - and when it happens I just breathe through them and they go away! IF they become too much, you can bend forward and hold your nose and blow (without letting air out) this corrects the heartbeat - also you can rub your Carotid artery on the side of your neck - it stimulates your heart into going back to the same rythym!
