GERD Interferring With Sleep

I was diagnosed with Gerd recently and prescribed Prilosac. As soon as I get the sodas out of my diet, I suspect I won't even need the pills. But I am hooked on caffeine. I was told by my doctor to keep elevated when sleeping so I won't have to worry about the food I consumed going in my throat. Problem is this doesn't work. In fact, when I sit up, with my eyes open I'm fine. As soon as I close my eyes while sitting up, I feel like food is going up my esophagus into my throat. It's like my body is trying to tell me not to go to sleep because of the symptoms. And laying down and trying to go to sleep is impossible. Can anybody relate to this problem?
