    Doxycycline

Hi, my doctors nurse just prescribed this antibiotic for my acne. My acne is really bad on my back and its starting to get bad on my face. Is Doxycycline effective in fighting acne? Also has anyone on these boards taken it

no, acne isnt caused by bacteria...it is the secondary factor because of poor cell turnover in the skin due to androgens in the skin. You need something to apply topically, that will help to increase cell turnover back to a normal state, such as retin-a or azelaic acid. I would suggest finacea...I have heard lots of great things about it. The newest type is finacea...look it up on a search engine. Its for rosacea but can obviously(well maybe not if you arent informed enough) be used for acne also. good luck p.s. talk to a dermatologist for expert advice before making any final decisions.

    Re: Doxycycline

I hate to say this, cos you just got the prescription, but I tried it for 4 months and it didn't do anything except maybe diminish my pores on my nose. I stuck with it because they say it takes a month to work, but in my opinion you need to work on hormones more than bacteria. I don't know how old you are, but if you're a girl I would say you're better off going on diane35 (it's birth control that has anti-androgens in it) and using a topical like DalacinT (that's a new zealand verson, I think you have something like CelacinT??) it is a antibacterial to apply to the area rather than take orally. Plus, your body can get used to antibiotics (which doxycycline is) which is not too good. That's my opinion anyway.

Go to the "Eye & Vision" board and read the posts under "Doxycycline" and learn more about it.

Some of us have Rosacea and now Blepharitis as a result and are on Doxycycline. Rean "Jen..." post regarding Doxycycline. Also look for Blepharits, you will also find info regarding Doxycycline.

    Re: Doxycycline

Last year this time, I started having a horrible breakout. The downside: it took 8 weeks for me to really notice a difference. The upside: after 6 months of use, I slowly weened off of it, and I've been clear ever since!
