    soap elimination: my solution

I have had moderate, cystic acne for years ( Im 25; had it since I was 16). I have researched and researched and experimented and failed and heard of and tried everything nine times over. I have eliminated and added foods, designed specific diets with different food allowences, Ive tried exercise, different sweating techniques, everything topical and internal, Ive tried detoxifying, Ive even fasted for two days while drinking mineral salts and grapefruit; to no avail. I am not saying these things dont work, but I am saying that I have finally found something that has worked, for me. I stopped washing my body with soap save for my armpits, crotch, and anus, and feet.

It has been about two months since i started not using soap on my body and face. I had acne on my back and chest, and along my neck and jawline. Acne takes a long time to heal once its developed, and all my marks are slowly healing. But the only new ones Ive gotten have greatly decreased in number, frequency, and in individual size. I also got them on my butt. But now there are no more cystic acne breakouts. I am sooooo happy and excited. My skin feels smoother, and a bit dryer and less numbly irritated.

I think the obvious conclusion is that I was overdrying my skin. Usually I would wash moderately once or twice a day with ivory soap or dove or antibacterial; though I stopped the antibacterial for a long time and rarely used it for very long. Sometimes I would freak-out and overscrub with loofsas or brushes or Id go over it a few times with soap, a few times a day. But this was rare; I usually was moderate. But now I think my skin has slowly adapted to not being dryed out by soap, and is producing less sebum to lubricate itself. My skin feels less oily all over - it almost feels a bit dry - and its much smoother to the touch. And it seems like its reproducing itself more quickly and efficiently.

As my skin gradually un-adapts to soap and its unnecessary overdrying effects, my pores have closed a bit, the little blackheads I had everywhere just waiting to bloat up into pus-heads are slowly pushing out the trapped stuff and are allowed to breathe again - they are starting to look like the clean healthy pores elsewhere on my body which never were clogged - and the marks I had from old pimples are healing more quickly than ever and feel completely smooth. All of my skin looks and feels less irritated and discolored.
This is a slow process, but I have never seen results like this and Im convinced its permanent. My skin is slowly healing to a state that I imagine will be similar to before I had acne: smooth, clear of blackheads whiteheads and blemishes, clear of large stretched pores, beautifully healthy and resilient.

Another thing: I have been drinking more water than usual. But Ive done that before, and the outstanding results are obviously from the soap elimination. But water cannot be underemphasized. It is needed for all the bodies functions; especially moving toxins out, lubricating everything - the skin - and moving vitamins through the systems.

Products like soap are pushed on us first by our cultural tradition - which we rarely question, and accept as "common sense" - and second by the media and advertising that exploit these values for their financial profit. I am frustrated with the american problem-solving paradigm. We solve problems symptomatically instead of preventatively. We dont need nine different soaps, we dont need topical acne solvents or antibacterial pills, and we desperately need to eliminate the use of terrible drugs like accutane which cause all sorts of other problems. If we stop the behaviors which cause our sicknesses, then we wont have to come up with solutions for them. I stopped using soap - I didnt need to use it all over my body, and now my skin is actually cleaner without it because its allowed to take care of itself, as it was designed to do.

I suppose you may be wondering how I can get my skin clean without soap, because you may have been conditioned to think its impossible to do so without nine different soaps, and nine different after-soap moisterizers, and then nine different after-soap-moisterizer-drying-agents. Well if you look around the world at other cultures, other cultures which are much older and wiser than this very young american culture, youll see that they have not used it on the majority of their skin for quite a long time. Some hot water and some friction and rinsing will suffice. Besides, your body should be cleaning itself from the inside out if you are eating and drinking healthy foods and liquids. The skin is the bodies largest organ, and its a toxin-elimination organ, so whatever toxins are existing in your body can and will come out your pores. I have decided that I have a much better chance of having clear healthy skin if I eat water-rich, fresh fruits and vegetables than if I eat rotten, processed, preservative and chemical laden foods like tv-dinners and fast-food. Its our choice.

My excitement for finding an acne prevention has turned into political ranting, and for this I apologize. Good luck everyone; and dont despair, keep researching and experimenting, and try to simplify so that there are less variables to juggle.

I think what you have is sensitive skin. Buy not washing it you have stopped the inflamation due to washing/rubbing. Has more to do with the rubbing than the soap.

did it take a full 2 months to see a reduction in acne or to heal completely? i have been using Cetaphil and have seen a major difference in skin texture in just one month. however, the acne is still coming out, albeit, less severe than before. i am thinking of quitting Cetaphil altogether...what do you think?

    p.s. i have oily skin.

do you not read pamphlets or do your own research?
Doctors have been telling us not to wash our faces with soap, because it overdrys our skin, causing our sebum gland to produce more, easily making our pores clogged and voila more spots.
Aggravation of the skin (rubbing to hard, being vigorous) can cause spots, as well as over washing and over cleanliness.
so I agree with you, and I am happy you have found a solution
