| accutane & tanning
i look like a corpse.
haha. i guess that is a kinda stupid way to start a post, but i'm so pale because i haven't been able to tan because of the accutane. anyways, it's really gross how pale i am, and i was wondering... after you finish accutane is it safe to start tanning right away? or do you have to wait?
any answer or advice would be appreciated.
(please no one tell me how bad tanning is... thanks.)

| Re: accutane & tanning
everyone is different, but today, I tanned for the first time... in a tanning bed that is. I did 16 min to test it out. It wasnt bad. I am not burned up. I turned the face tanners off though. But, my make up can make me look bronzer. rule of thumb: it is really healthy to get 15 min of sun a day. No make up. No spf. either early morning or early evening. when the sun is not the strongest. the sun has some anti-bacterial qualities that can help with acne. But, too much sun is clearly not good for the skin. So dont overdue it. In regards to tanning, you have a few choices... the mist (relatively expensive, like $30 each time and only lasts like 3 days), tanning lotions (claritin has a nice line), or go to a bed and test it out. Like I said, everyone is different. But, I know the feeling of being ghost like... and summer is coming with skirts and tanks... so... good luck.

I tanned in the middle of my accutane treatment (big no no, I know. I also waxed...I just didn't listen to my derm ). I tanned a lot quicker due to the accutane and it did make my skin look better. I don't normally tan though, I just did it because I was going away on vacation. If you do decide to use a tanning bed, just be very careful.

I'm on my 86th day of Accutane and I, too, love to tan. I followed the doctor's orders of not hitting the tanning bed for the first 2 months, but then spring hit and I had to do it lol. It made me break out every single time! Not just normal breakouts, but big, cyst breakouts on my face that lasted a week and left blister-like scars. I still tan, but now I just cover my face with some cardboard-towel thing that I got at the salon that protects skin from the bulbs. Be careful and make sure you wear sunscreen!
Hope this helps!

I also tanned the entire time i was on accutane and nothing happend .
I tanned in the salon in the real sun and i was fine a had no problems.
But then agian i was only on a low dose 2 pills of 20mg a week .If you are on a really high dose like three 20mg pills a day i would reccomend you be careful. You dont want to end up like a burn victim . I would also reccomend if you go to a tanning salon try tanning your face only a few min at a time if nothing happens increase the minutes. GOOD LUCK.

Im on 60mg a day. Ive never heard of 20 mg a week! I would think that would do nothing. Anyway.. I was dying to tan too but decided not too. I did a couple times @ just 5 mins and nothing happened bad wise. but I dont think thats the point. its not about getting burned I dont think its that your skin is sensitive... well I dont know but I know the derm doesnt like it!! lol Well if you want a tip, I know alot of people dont like self tanners but Ive been using Clinique self tanner moose and even the face lotion. It has a nice color and adapts to your skin. you only have to re apply it every 3 days. its not orange, it doesnt face unevenly. and it was only $15 each! thats what Im going with till im off Tane. only 2 more months for me!! Im doing great! my face hasnt broke out for like 2 months.

| Re: accutane & tanning Don't Do It! I used to love tanning, laying out whatever and i always thought it helped my acne. well after doing some research i'm done with the tanning. First of all it does temporarily make your skin look better because it will shrink your sebaceous glands for a short time. however uvb and uva rays affect the immune system, it can actually supress the immune system and this allows bacteria to multiply making the acne worse. that's why people who get cold sores have an outbreak after laying in the sun. also uva rays (what tanning beds use) usually don't burn the skin, they go to the dermis and destroy the collagen and elastin. the effects won't show up for up to 10 years so unless you want to look way older than your years don't do it!
