Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

I came across an article that said that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate promotes acne in people. It's used in a lot of soaps, face and body washes, shampoos, etc. I noticed that it's the first ingreident listed in my body wash, which coincidently (perhaps?), is the cause of my back acne since it started around the same time I began using this body wash.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (a "cousin" of the Soduim Lauryl) are also used for the same purposes but are supposedly better at NOT promoting acne.

One of these ingredients (I forget which) is also in my CETAPHIL face wash, which my dermatologist recommended! EDIT: I checked out the ingredients and it actually has Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate which aren't as bad as the Soduim Lauryl Sulfate. Also, my body wash has Sodium Laureth Sulfate also.

I'm looking around online for more information but alot of the websites are all about the horrible chemicals in all of our products and how they all cause cancer, which I think is going a tad bit overboard.

Anyone have any insite?

Re: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

All of the sulfate based products are very similar in that they are drying agents and help to remove oil. You will see that most shampoos contain these chemicals as their base to wash the oil and styling products out of your hair. It will dry the oil on your skin which my be causing the acne. If your acne is not from oily skin then you may have a hormonal imbalance that you should have checked out. In any case, the chemical is not that harmful. Most acne washes contain much harsher drying agents.

Re: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

I do have oily skin, but my acne is hormonal. It seems as though a lot of websites say that SLS does aggrevate acne. SLES is safer. Supposedly.
