    Mixing proactiv with other stuff

So I recently got a hold of some proactiv and being the skeptical person that I am, I want to take it on my terms. First of all, I've tried all types of BP (5-10%) wash & cream, Erythromycin (pill), Tetracycline (pill), Minocyclin (pill), differin gel, clindomycin cream. I've also tried salcylic acid oxypads & clean & clear dual action moisturizer. Pretty much all the crap that I just listed, save the clean & clear, worked. I still have a lot of acne (not as bad as when I tried the antibiotics), and I think it's worse b/c of the stuff I've tried before. So after recently getting proactiv, I naturally had some reservations about taking the full plunge. I heard friends and people on this forum talk about how bad proactiv is, so I decided to mix it with the stuff I'm using right now. So right now, my plan is this:

Morning (I don't regularly do use these products in the mornings - maybe once every other day):
    1) cleanse with DHC mild soap
    2) proactiv toner
    3) proactiv oil control cream
    4) proactiv moisturizer
    5) CC on the spot (with sal. acid)

    1) Cleanse with Olay exfoliator (with microbeads)
    2) Witch Hazel astringent
    3) CC dual action moisturizer
    4) CC on the spot

The reason I don't use the proactiv wash or lotion is b/c I don't like benzoyl peroxide. So after 2 days of using proactiv (I'm not that patient), my skin has been feeling more irrirated. Also I've been getting really small whiteheads and bumps on my chin that I haven't gotten before. Before, in the mornings, I would:
    1) cleanse with DHC soap
    2) Este Lauder toner
    3) Banana Boat "Faces" Sunblock with aloe

Anyway, I guess I'll try the proactiv stuff a little longer and see what happens. Oh yeah, I also think there's a strong correlation between sleep (which I don't get at the right hours or enough of), diet, and stress contribute greatly to acne. Please tell me what you guys think of my regimen. I would love to hear it !

The reason that Proactive is supposed to work is b/c of the Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid are supposed to work TOGETHER. The products are specifically designed to be used together, so by taking out the products that have benzoyl peroxide in them and replacing them with other products, you probably aren't going to get a good result, and may even irritate your skin even more.

Personally, I thought Proactive was a bunch of hogwash. It didn't work for me AT ALL, but I have heard stories of people that it did help. Those people seem to be in the minority though!

Anyway, basically you can get the same effect of Proactive for half the price in your local drugstore. Proactive's main ingredients are Benzoyl and Salicylic Acid - I mean, it's not like it has anything "special" in it that most acne sufferers haven't already tried a million times. They just put the stuff together in a convenient little system, added some soothing "botanicals" like aloe and such, jacked up the price, paid Jessica Simpson a hefty check to plug it and make it seem like a miracle, and there you go. It's so overrated. If you want the same effect, go to Walgreens and get one product with Benzoyl, another with Salicylic, then go home and use them together. There ya go, homeade Proactive for ya.

Can ya tell I'm not a fan of Proactive? LOL. Also, yes, I agree with you that stress, diet, and sleep play a larger role controlling one's acne than does anything topical you put on your face.

Yeah, thats true...I should use them together, but knowing the crappiness of proactiv and the possible side-effects it has on my skin...I'm just not gonna use it. Thanks for the advice . I guess I'll try that tea tree oil stuff now.

Re: Mixing proactiv with other stuff

I had a consultation this week with a skin care specialist concerning my daughter. As we talked for a while she told me that her own daughter had acne and that what cleared her up was pro-active plus vita-clear supplements. I was surprised that she would offer this info. since she doesn't sell it. Her own child has used it for 7 months. She said that it worked the best when used with the supplements. Then the receptionist told me that pro-active helped her skin also. A lady I work with told me that pro-active cured her nephews bad acne. I wouldn't call it complete crap since it does work for others. I would not mix it with other products and use it exactly as directed.

I've been using Proactiv for two months and haven't seen NOT one result. This stuff is just peroxide and witch hazel. UGGH.

Proactive does have a gentle formula which they don't advertise. The kit is 4 boxes which are a salicylic acid face wash, alcohol free toner, a day lotion with 2% salicylic acid, and a night lotion with 1% salicylic acid. Next time you order ask specifically if they have the kit without the benzoyl peroxide. If I remember right, it was the same price as the 3 pc regular kit.

As for my (lack of) sucess with Proactiv, I had better results with the original kit, but the toner burned my face. The gentle formula didn't irritate or work for me at all.

I just got it yesterday. I'm hoping it works but the thing is when I'm not stressed my skin looks great. I think maybe a shrink would work better for my kind of acne :P
