Glycolic Acid

Hi Everyone

Can anyone tell me what glycolic acid actually does for the skin?

I have mainly red marks on my skin and a couple of active spots every now a then. Should I try this "glycolic acid" if so what amount should I use? 30% 40% 50%?

I'm really despreate to get rid of these marks they make my face look bad sceans as I have a very pale face!

Thanks in advance.

Re: Glycolic Acid

Hi, glycolic acid peels eats away the top layers of your skin. How deep it eats into the skin layers depends on the strength of the peel.
If you have acne scaring, the red marks are easier to get rid of than the deeper pit like scars. Since you mentioned that you have red marks, you should probably just go with a medium peel (a "light" peel will do nothing more than exfoliate and wont help the scars much at all). You may need between 2 to 5 peels done 2 to 4 weeks apart. The medium peels take about one to 2 weeks to heal. You will be really red and feel like you have a sun burn for the first 24 hours or so. Your skin will after a few days start to peel a lot (do NOT pick at the skin peeling off because it will give you horrible scars), just let it come off on it's own. If they have a 5 peel package at a cheaper price than buying them one at a time then for sure get it cause you'll save $100 or more. Depending on your scars, this is a great way to even out skin tone (get rid of red marks, sun spots, freckles, rough texture, fine lines, some scars *red ones should for sure go but pitted scars will need the deep peel instead of the medium peel.. Shop around and find the best price and most experienced person you can find to do your peel (you don't want to end up with a student or someone in training *at least I wouldn't wanna take that chance on my face*). You can search on the net for before & after photos glycolic peel and see what the range of results are.
BY THE WAY**** Don't buy the acid peels off the net and do it yourself! I bought it at 30% thinking I would save some cash and ended up messing up the skin on my hands! I'm not sure what I did wrong, I followed all instructions, but I ended up with a rough, mildly scared texture on the top of my hands. If I want to fix it at this point, I'll have to get laser done to correct it but it's mild so, I can live with it. THANK GOD I didn't put it on my face first!!!
Good luck & take care!

Re: Glycolic Acid

By the way, the peel I got on the net that left a scar like texture on my hands was NOT a glycolic peel. It was a TCA peel.

Re: Glycolic Acid

Comercial products are not allowed to sell more than 2-3% concentrations of BHAs and AHAs. By no means should you do an acid peel of strength of 20-40% on yourself. YOU WILL mess your skin up. Leave those type of peels to the professionals. I recommend seeing a derm or an aesthetician.
