Derm prescribe BCP's?

I am planning on going back to my derm and getting a prescription for accutane. She originally wanted to put me on it, but I was hesitant because of the side effects. I know I need to be on birth control, which currently I'm not. Is the derm able to prescribe this or do I have to go to my primary doc?

What I'm hoping for is to make the appt. with the derm, have the blood test, and walk out with the prescription. What can I do to make this happen?

I'm male but im pretty sure your derm can prescribe you BC.

I know that with my derm I got the prescription right away and did the blood test that day and she said she'd call me if anything showed up on the test.

however, i know some anal derms that won't let you take a pill until the blood test comes back clean. Hopefully your derm is in the non-paranoid about accutane category.

Re: BC & Accutane

There are limitations on what a doctor can prescribe based on medical specialty, but I'm not sure if BC pills would be within a derm's group of allowed meds. For instance there are regulations that would restrict a derm from prescribing meds to treat schitzophrenia because the derm is not qualified to diagnose mental disorders nor is it something skin related.

Dermatologists can prescribe birth control because birth control is often used to treat acne.
