Exclamation For those with back/chest acne..

This is going to get long, but bare with me
I haven't seen this topic brought up, and since I have my own issues with this condition and had never heard of it prior to being diagnosed with it, it's very possible that some of you may have it as well..

If you have back and/or chest acne, and even on your face, Pityrosporum Folliculitis might be to blame for some of it. It's simply an overgrowth of a yeast that lives on everyone's skin. It's highly associated with seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), so if you do have dandruff AND acne, definately look into this! The pityrosporum, which is the yeast, causes the bumpy rash, and then most of the time, you'll have regular acne mixed in with it.. it can easily turn into a big ol' mess.

Backstory here.. I've had these tiny bumps all around the hairline on my face and neck for years upon years upon years. Every now and then, I'd get a few bumps on my chest, but nothing major. I've always had a slight dandruff issue as well. Last summer, I started getting the bumps all over my chest as well as down my neck.. then it went down the back of my neck and all over my upper back and upper arms. I thought it was a simple heat rash and of course, my idiotic ex-doctor agreed (she was a quack and a half, but we'll not go there). But, then I started getting getting zits on my back and chest, which I've NEVER had before. My ex-doc just said it was acne.. I dealt with this crap for a year!!!!

FINALLY, after I switched doctors a year later, I got my new doc to take a look at it. She called in another doctor in the clinic to take a look.. this other doc was highly interested in weird rashes for some reason. He took one look at it and diagnosed it as Pityrosporum Folliculitis. I would link you to a good website, but since I'm not allowed to do so, just research it

We treated it with Nizoral cream.. it's a prescription cream I had to use 2 or 3 times a day for like 2 weeks. I also had to shampoo my hair with Nizoral shampoo every other day for the 2 weeks. It took longer than the 2 weeks to get rid of this crap since I've had it for so many years and it had gone psycho on my body for a year. It seems like once you have to deal with this condition, it never goes away and you need continuous upkeep to keep it from overtaking you again.

Now, since I do have other acne issues, I use the aspirin mask/scrub on my face and also on my chest and back since the PF issue. The upkeep on the PF is basically, every 3rd day, rubbing OTC Nizoral shampoo into my skin on my upper back, upper arms, chest, neck, and around the hairline on my face and allowing it to soak in for 10 minutes. Then I shower as normal and shampoo with the Nizoral. That keeps the yeast at bay.. The next day, I use the aspirin scrub in the shower on my upper body and face (it's the exact same thing as the aspirin mask, but, my skin is way too sensitive and using it as a mask is far too drying)..

I use plain old benzoil peroxide every morning, but, only dotted on the very few pimples that I have. At night, I use it all over my face, chest, upper back, and neck area. Between the benzoil peroxide, aspirin scrub, and the Nizoral shampoo, I'm happy to report that I have maybe 1 or 2 small pimples and maybe a bump or two here and there on my back and chest.. EXCEPT when I sweat.. that's when the yeast tries to go nutso again and I need to use the shampoo every day for a few days.

I'm by NO means saying that this is what I think some of you have.. This is just something to look into if you have dandruff and back/chest acne as well.. IF it's yeast causing alot of your problems, it's not going to go away without some sort of antifungal medication!!!!

Thanks for the info Dee74. I don't have dandruff, but I do get tiny bumps around my hairline. I have the back acne too. I'm going to look for that shampoo. Can't hurt.

    No problem

One thing.. when you read on other websites about it, alot of them say that it causes alot of itching. It doesn't ALWAYS, though. Mine only itched a little bit when I would sweat.

Also, I forgot to mention this before, but, people with oily skin are more prone to this stuff.

Wow thank you I am almost sure that this is what I have on my chest and a little on my back. I have been treating it temporarily with Aveeno hydrocortizone cream and so far there have been no new red marks and the itching is subsiding. This Pityrosporum Folliculitis has caused me to not to be able to go shirtless anywhere for the past two years(has been hell). I will definately go to my derm with the name of this condition he will probably be impressed.

Re: For those with back/chest acne..

sounds like a might have this not really sure.. around my early teens i devopled some redness on the creases of my nose which may be seborrheic dermatitis... anyways i started taking some injectable testosterone and got lots of back acne and some on my chest... I have been taking clomid to increase natural test levels which is why i still have some of it around.

My back itches like crazy sometimes.. ill have to look into this
