anyone tried Head & Shoulders for acne?

Has anyone tried using Head & Shoulders as a facial cleanser for acne as recommended by Oldguy on this bulletin board? I've never heard of that and wondered if anyone was brave enough to try it!! If so, any success stories?

yes, I have tried it and it seems to have made my skin quite smooth and soft. you do also seem to get a bit of exfoliation, which is good. also seems to have helped existing blemishes as well. they seem smaller after having used it. it's the zinc working topically.

only thing is, I am not quite sure how long to leave it on for before washing off. is it a few minutes? btw, this is my first time posting on any board, so I hope that this helps some.

Thanks, tootles (I like that name!). Are you still using it now? And what kind of acne do/did you have? I was worried that it might make my face feel slimy or something. I don't know if you are supposed to leave it on for any amount of time, though I don't think so. I guess I'll give it a try. I would like to know how long you've used it though and if it is drying at all. Thanks for the info. Welcome to the board. I'm new to this too but have found it to be very helpful.

Re: anyone tried Head & Shoulders for acne?

thanks for replying back. you are my first reply back.

anyway, on to the serious stuff. I have moderate/severe acne. It was a lot worse when I was in my teens. That was the worst. I have been battling with it for many years but it has gradually gotten better with different treatments.
I also really like tea tree oil for spot treatment and then on top of that my acne medication. But I am finding that Head and shoulders works better.

The head and shoulders does dry you out a little but it is tolerable. If you want to put a light moisturiser on after you can if you find it too drying. I dont find it too drying, but because it tends to exfoliate, it gets a little flaky with the dead skin cells shedding. But its all good.

The only draw back I find is the smell. But I foam it up and apply and leave on while I brush my teeth or something. The idea of using shampoo on my face is not very psychologically appealing to me, but you can get past that. I think you will be pleased with the results, although I have only used for several days so far. But do be cautious. Start off slowly. Dont leave on face like I have. Try it the first time and see how your skin reacts and then you can decide from there. I only use it once a day.

Oh, you know what. I reckon it works better than my acne medication. It's already been reducing a cyst on my chin. Great, hey! Thanks oldguy!!!

Oh, and for anyone who suffers with seborrhic dermatitus on their scalp or suffers with really bad dandruff, I have found something that has just about cured me and I have tried many, many things. I use 100% tea tree oil on my scalp.

First, I mix several drops into my head and shoulders shampoo and wash my hair with that.
And then as a maintenance, I apply with a cotton bud the next day or so the 100% stuff straight on my scalp. Very soothing! Has worked like a charm. Sorry to get off the topic, but you never know, sometimes falling dandruff can also aggravate your skin.

Sorry for making for such a long read. I do sometimes get a bit carried away. Golden girl please let me know how everything goes.

Re: anyone tried Head & Shoulders for acne?

I've been using head & shoulders for 6 months on my hair. The funny thing is that my acne is worse around the hairline and on my back, where the shampoo runs down. It's a 2 in 1 plus I use more conditioner. So I wonder if it is the conditioner or the H&S? Sorry that's not much help.

baba777, it's probably the conditioner because I read that conditioner has an insoluble wax in it sometimes and that could really block your pores. Just a theory.

Ive used head and shoulders for a while now. It works really good i think. At first I couldnt stand the smell, but you can buy a type that smells good. Called head and shoulders fresh scent or something.

Re: anyone tried Head & Shoulders for acne?

I've been using head and shoulders as my face wash for about a week now. I use the "Refreshing" H&S's, meant for dry or oily hair (or face). I must admit at first I was a little skeptic of this whole idea, but my face actually feels a lot cleaner, smoother, and less flakey. This particular H&S's has a menthol type of aroma to it and it makes my pores feel all tingly, I'm not too sure as to what the menthol does or if it has any purpose to the shampoo, but it feels nice.

    So far so good.

Heh, that would explain why when I stopped using conditioner my acne on my back and shoulders actually got better. Psychadelic!

after reading all these great stories of how head and shoulders treats acne, i think i'll try it now too! just one question, is it only head and shoulders that works like this, or are there other shampoos that work the same way?

jug-I think you have to use H & S because it's the one that contains zinc which is the beneficial ingredient.
