acne scars

Hi guys,
Recently I placed a post asking whose acne leaves him/her with scars, meaning discolorations and/or indentations...I didn;t get many responses, but I know that many people here do have bad acne, and was wondering who else might be experiencing scarring acne....Also, on a scale from one to ten, how much does the scarring bother you....I recently finished a course of accutane, and most of my face is clear, but I have scarring now, and the scarring totally bothers me...From a scale of one to ten, I'd say it bothers me like a 7 or 8...Sigh...I'm thinkin of doin microdermabrasion or pulse dye laser a bit later on...Anyways, hang in there guys and keep the faith!!!

Have you tried Mederma? I think it's making my skin "peel" by being very drying.

I usually just get dark spots (hyperpigmentation) rather than indents, though, in two areas, my upper cheeks, I have noticed some indented scars.

On a scale of one to ten, I would say that scarring is a 10. Sh*t, I'd rather have a clear face than scars...

Hey regulator

I notice you mentioned Mederma, on a recent trip to my doc's office in one of the Magazine there was an advertisement on Mederma I never heard of it, till then. Since you have or are using it... does it work? By any chance does it help the dark spots also?

Re: acne scars

i have a new batch of scars from a recent breakout. very dark red--and very depressing as i know it will be months until they fade. and, for me, the only thing that works is good ol' retin a cream (not micro) and i use .1% or .05%. nothing else including "salt" peels have worked for me.

even make-up doesn't cover the new scars. and they're flat. it's the damn darkened pigmentation. and i have very fair skin-- make-up only makes the marks darker.

i wonder if anyone has had luck hiding them. if so...please share.

kh

Re: acne scars

My nurse advised me to forgo those expensive treatments for scars (waste of money she said) and do the following for old scars

In her experience

1) Massaging scars daily will contribute collagen as much as laser treatments
2) Use a facial scrub each morning to stimulate circulation- helps scars to fade, exp. pockmark and indented ones
3) IMP! Every night, use a facial brush and brush hard- this aggressive exfoliation will definitely soften scars in 10 weeks
4) Apply Vaseline 6x a day- do a search on this board for 'Clinical proof that Vaseline heals scars'

philLaser - have you tried these things your nurse told you about - how did they work out for you? Especially the facial brush - does anyone else do this? Please post your experiences. Thanks!

Mind you, I brushed my face until it was very flushed and red. My scars looked worse and worse (because I was exfoliating so aggresively) that my mom said 'Gosh what happened to your face'? But after 9 weeks, I had 'sanded down' the scars- skin is so much smoother now.

Thanx philLaser for the information/advise. Your skin looks much better ~ congratulations! I think I'll give that a try. I'm surprised that Vaseline helps. It's petroleum...and bad for the environment! (i'm kidding/sarcastic!)
[This message has been edited by Valerie1 (edited 04-20-2001).]

Hey Elzida:
I have only been using Mederma for about 3 weeks. I'am using it for old scar(dark coloration) and I think it is lightening it a little. But it takes many months according to the product for it to show drastic improvement. The product also smells. Anyhow, Vaseline would do nothing for my problem.

Re: acne scars

Hey phil, what kind of facial scrub did you use? I tried using a very soft facial brush the other night and some parts of my face stung a little and was red, did that happen to you? I didn't even brush that hard. One more question, what kind of cream or facial cleanser did you use with the facial brush?
[This message has been edited by minimouse (edited 04-20-2001).]

Hey Phil!
Since my scars are not horrible, but rather normal, can't I just get a peel? Wont it peel off the top layer of my skin, diminishing the ugly red marks? My face ALREADY feels smooth after washing it, its just when I look in the mirror it tells a different story.

I don't think one peel would do it. You'd have to get several peels.
