    Saw Palmetto

I had ecently asked if women could take saw palmetto and got mixed responses so I decided to look up on the info myself. I am very impressed with what I found. i don't recall the sites, but it is suppossed to help reduce DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which causes hair loss and MAY cause acne. In regards for women, I read that it should help reduce facial hair (esp. in hirutism) and also aid in balancing hormones - this is pretty much what bcp do according to my doctor, with the exception of birth control of course. Anyway, as a result of my research and the great response my brother has had since using it for three months now, I have decided to give it a try. i would really recommend looking up the info. on saw palmetto, it is quite interesting and may be able to help.

    Re: Saw Palmetto

    Annabelle,

I found out about saw palmetto after looking up info about 5-alpha reductase (an enzyme which mediates the conversion of testosterone into DHT). The saw palmetto inhibits the action of 5-alpha reductase, which makes it a better option for men (since testosterone levels are not affected). In addition to playing a role in acne, DHT is also implicated in male pattern baldness and benign prostate hyperplasia. It is actually used in Europe to treat BPH....

I've been on it for about a week, so it's too early to tell what the effects are.

Gianni, Do you take the extract or the berries and how much are you taking. My brother takes the extract at 160mg twice a day, but it is recommended to take two pills twice a day. I have just started takin it also as I read it will help to balance hormones which in turn may help with acne. I have stopped breaking out for a while now, but I am still interested in prevention.

    Re: Saw Palmetto

Annabelle, it's 160mg, and it says ``berries'' on the nutritional info label. I assume they just grind up the berries. Is this less potent than the extract?

    Re: Saw Palmetto

From what I read, most of teh research done has used the extract form and I recall reading that it is better to use the extract for this purpose as there is not much info. on the effects or potency of the berries. I had also bought the berries, but switched to the extract upon reading that the research studies used the extracts.

Do you know if there is any reason why someone on birth control pills should not take saw palmetto? I'm very interested in it.

    Re: Saw Palmetto

    Annabelle,

I just looked up the the ingredients in the Whole Foods brand of saw palmetto I'm taking (softgels) -- it says on the back: ``standardized to contain 85%-90% fatty acids and sterols''. This is what is meant by ``extract'' even if it says ``saw palmetto berries'' on the package. So I think I'm ok.

Thanks again for the info! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

    Re: Saw Palmetto

i'm taking Alesse and just starting taking saw palmetto also. Why do they recommend not taking both together? MD's often prescibe the bcp and Aldactone (spironolactone) and thats used for hirsutism in women also. Just wandering where you saw not to take both together? Also, I've been on it for a few days & my skin's been actually pretty good. (and i'm PMSing)

    Re: Saw Palmetto

    Isabel,
I really don't think that saw palmetto will interfere with the bcp, but I keep reading in all the info. I looked up that individuals on bcp or hormone replacement therapy should check with their doctors before using the two in conjunction. But many sites suggested that it is being recommended instead of the bcp (by naturopaths/herbalists) for acne and hirutism in women. It's all over the net you can find the info. you need.

    Re: Saw Palmetto

I think it is required to take two capsules a day: one in the morning and one at night. this was recommended by the herbalist in my healthfood store. I started out with one a day for the first week, then started taking two a day. so far, I have not had any side effects at all.
