Just starting Accutane with a few questions...

I bet they've been answered a million times, but I need to find out for myself. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Firstly, Mr. Right maybe you can help, will cysts dry up and go away on Accutane? Or will they push through the pores?

Secondly, how early on the medication do you notice the initial breakout usually?

Thirdly, when do drying effects really start kicking in? I don't want to start applying a lot of moisturizer just yet.

Oh and finally, do they say to stay away from any foods on Accutane?

    Thanks!

    Matt

The drying kicked in during the first week, really quick.

I got no new spot during the first 2 weeks after that I got 5 within a week. After 6 weeks I was completely clear.

You dont have to stay away from any food, perhaps icebear liver. Just be light on the booze and dont take vitamine tabs containg more than 5000iu of vitamine-A.

Good luck and welcome to a new life.

About the cyst going away while on accutane, some will form whiteheads and others will just get red and inflamed, yet not come to head, those ones will eventually get dried up from the insides. (I've had several get dried up from the inside, however most of them were pushed to the surface during the initial breakout.)

Re: Just starting Accutane with a few questions...

Its almost the end of week two and the worst days of my life. I now have pimples i never thought possible. When i wake up in the morning my face hurts sooooo bad. I have never had acne this bad, and i'm starting to worry that accutane is not working. I'm at 40mg/day. Has anyone else ever had this "initial" breakout? How long does it last? Why do some ppl get it? At night i can feel my face pulsing... Like they are doing constuction on my face. Sometimes its hard to goto sleep. I do't have ANY side effects. No dry skin, no nosebleeds, and my face is more oily than it has ever been? I need help!

Thanks everyone, I'll be monitoring my situation closely over the next couple of weeks.

As well, only on the second day of Accutane, I have noticed my face becoming very oily... in fact, new pimples are already popping up which is actually (for once) a good thing because I know it's working.

My guess is that during the initial outbreak that I have seemingly started, my face will produce a lot of oil in cleaning the pores.

I didn't have any cysts to start so I can't answer that one. My initial breakout happened after about a week. I started using moisturizer as soon as I started as a preventative to scaly skin. You are advised to stay away from fatty foods because Accutane raises your triglycerides, thouhg I have eaten normal and I have not had problems (I get blodd tests done every month)

Re: Just starting Accutane with a few questions...

well this is my fifth days of accutane...stranget though the 1st 3 days i notice a slight decrease in oil then it went back to norm! maybe i am using retin a together with accutane...but the thing is when i used retin a my face get olier!..and 10mg/day is it too little?..i heard that to be completely cure of acne u have to start with a high dose...and the most i can afford is 30mg/day which is like 180/mth--p.s for 30 tablets of 10mg each cost me 60 bucks per mth.and i paying all these all on my own and i;m still a student.. and i counted it will took me like 7 mths or so for me to complete my course is this too long?..anyway i started accutane when i am clear of acne..cos i was using antibiotics at that time i thought if i taken off it my acne will flare up so just to be save i ask my gp to prescribe accutane to clear me frm acne for life..hee. and also does taking accutane means u cant go out in the sun?..and cant exfoliate?..
