For the ladies w/hormonal acne...

Ladies,
I am on day 42 of 60mg/day of accutane and now 21 years old (yes I am female!). I have been doing a lot of research about hormonal acne and think I may have it. Correct me if I am worng, but hormonal acne includes aspects/symptoms such as:

-irregular periods
-hair on face (i have hairy eyebrows and mustache- thank god i am blonde!)
-i break out worse at that time of the month
-acne concentrated around chin& jaw
-hypothyroidism (my mom has this and with this i hear you have lots of fatigue, always cold, and the classic "inner tube" fat around your waist)
-problems w/conception (again it took my mom 6 years to conceive and she lost a baby- so maybe i too have a problem)

further evidence:
-when i am not on BCP and have sex my skin looks better
-BCPs such as Ortho Tri have NOT helped me at all and if anything make it worse
-i have dry skin, not oily so how will accutane help?
-i started developing at a young age and now have a small chest (due to too much androgens? maybe?)

I have read that women with hormonal acne do not see any postitve results w/accutane. so i am wondering why i am on it?

Anyway I would love your feedback concerning this matter and also would like to know what you think about my situation- thanks girls!

20... well now 21!

It sounds like you may be a good candidate for spiro, and I'm surprised your doc put you on accutane. I took two rounds of it, but I didn't have hormonal acne; mine is totally related to oil production/bacteria/genetics. Good luck!

21withacne, have you got your condition diagnosed? It may be PCOS....

I had some of your symptoms too, but the doctor put me on a BC called yasmin, and it brought my symptoms under control.

Don't you hate the acne around your chin? I hhhhhhhhhhhated it!

i agree this sounds like possible PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is very common. it involves hirsutism (hair on face), acne, other symptoms. ask your derm about spironolactone!! it is great for women with PCOS or hormonal acne. it can totally clear you up. only thing is they may prescribe the pill at the same time, don't know how you feel about that. anyway good luck.

I can't belive that birth control pills didn't help you, 21withacne. The pill was the only thing that helped me after 2 years of $%^&@* around with a dermatologist who knew I had hormonal acne but still kept me on Retin-A and tetracyclene, then Differin, then prednisone, which made it worse. I finally went to my family doc. who, after learning I had too much testosterone and adrenaline, put me on pills, and within a day I saw that no new zits were popping up. I suggest that every woman with acne get a blood test done to determine if their hormones are the cause of their acne!

Re: For the ladies w/hormonal acne...

sooo birth control only works for hormonal acne or just acne in general??? cuz im taking ortho tri cyclen and i dont know if mine is hormonal or not, i have it on my chin, nose, and on my cheeks right by my nose... ill be upset if it only works for hormonal acne but my acne is pretty mild

btw 21withacne.. the pill works different for every 1 (which im sure u know lol).. if the first one u try doesnt work within a few months u can just try another, it might take a few pills to find one thats right for you.. since OTC didnt work for you, u should try yasmin.. its working for my mom and it worked for my friend.. good luck

21withacne, if you suffer from irregular periods and hirsuitism, you must definitely see a gynecologist. Don't delay.

I have (had) hormonal acne...it's under control because I'm taking an awesome BCP--ortho cyclen (not ortho tri-cyclen). But the only symptom I had on your list was acne. So I do agree with other posters who say that you need to look further into your problem, cause strictly hormonal acne isn't accompanied by those other things you mentioned.

Re: For the ladies w/hormonal acne...

I would just like to add that I was on ortho-cyclen (NOT TRI) for several years and had mostly perfectly clear skin. The trouble started only when I went off the BCP. Needless to say I am back on the BCP, but this time around I am on Yasmin, not ortho since I always gain 10 pounds on ortho. I have not gained any weight on Yasmin and things are just beginning to clear up at the end of my third month.

how was your skin before you were on ortho?

Re: For the ladies w/hormonal acne...

I started Ortho when I was 14 with basically clear skin, so Ortho did not make me break out. I only had the occassional bothersome pimple.
