Can only buy lowest strength retin A over the counter?

Yesterday I bought retin A over the counter, it is the lowest strenght. I got home and looked at the old one I used to use (it worked well for red marks) and it was a higher stength so i went back, and they said for the higher strength I need a prescription? I dont recall getting a prescription before for Retin A, has anyone else had this? I dunno, I guess ill go to different Pharmacy!

yes, you need a prescription for retin-a unless you buy low grade retinol products or other topicals that contain retinol.

Yeah, the only stength they would give me was 0.025%.. thats the lowest percentage. I wanted 0.05, but i need a prescription. Thats weird, but oh well, im just using it for red marks so i guess 0.025% will work alright

If you can believe it, Retin-A--as we've all come to know and love it--the patent on the stuff ran out about 4 years ago. Now Ortho/Johnson & Johnson are repackaging and marketing the 0.025% strength and calling it Renova and being distributed to many skin rejuvenating/spa/anti-aging clinics; I guess in some retail outlets, too, as you've found in California. This may be a test market--I don't know.

Haven't you noticed all the acid reflux products that have hit the OTC shelves in the past few years? They're all half the dosage of what had to be prescribed by doctors. Their patents ran out, too, and they got repackaged and remarketed for retail distribution.

If you could continue to get a physician to prescribe the lower dosage Retin-A cream by its generic name, rather than by the Renova or any other OTC name, you can save a bundle. REgards, Pat Brown

Yeah, you can get retinol from your pharmacy. Actually Im in Canada right now. You can get many products which contain retinol. The one I have right now is 0.025%. its probably not as good for acne prevention, but i just use it for the red marks.

Retinol and Retin-A are two very different things (chemically).

They are both derived from vitamin A, but the strength of Retin-A is many many many times greater than retinol at the same concentration.

0.025% of retinol wont do you much good.

If your in Canada, just go to your family doctor (no need for a derm), and ask for Vitamin A Acid cream.

It will cost you about $15 (CAN including tax) for a tube

The liquid B5 is going pretty good I think. Ive only been on it 1.5 weeks but my face is no oilier now, but not any drier I dont think. I know 1.5 weeks isnt too long but its a start! My main prob is the red marks left from the initial breakout still <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">
If your interested Ill keep you posted how the progress is coming with the B5.
    take care and good luck!

    Thanks for the offer Crz!
Actually yesterday afternoon, since I dont have a family doctor because im only in Canada temporarily, I went to a walk in clinic, and the nice doctor there gave me a prescription. Im just nervous to start retin A, I know its a great medicine that works, but the initial breakout scares me!!! :P
Thanks too, I didnt know there was a dif between retinol and retin A :P
