I had the subcision/excision done today!

At 12:45 I was called back to the room. I answered a few questions and washed my face. The nurses then took some pictures and sterilized my face. At 1pm the Dr. came in and we chatted briefly. He took a marker and puts dots on the scars to be worked on today. There were about 15 scars marked. Then he warned me that I would be feeling pricks because he'd be giving me a local on each of the marked scars. I think he let the solution drip out of the syringe first, so it hurt less as he inserted the needle. In all, not bad, just a few pin pricks.

The he turned on this really bright light and I had to keep my eyes closed, so I really couldn't see what they were doing. I could feel them working on me, but no pain. I couldn't feel an instruments poking or prodding my scars. I could feel the length of sutures being pulled through. It didn't hurt a bit, I just felt a slight tugging.

Then they put these strips over the now-fixed scars. It's sort of see-through, and must allow for a lot of air and breating room, because the nurse said to apply the polysporin ointment directly to the strip and it will be absorbed by the wound. The strips are real small. They're the size of those facial-laceration strips they use on ER She also put some sort of adhesive on the strips that keep them stuck to the skin longer. I was finished at 2 pm. Prep and post cleanup was about a half hour. The actual procedure was about 30 minutes.

So, my right cheek has about 12 strips on it going in different directions, and my left cheek has 3. I'm definitely not going anywhere this weekend . if the strips fall off in the tub or shower, it's no big deal, you should just try to wear them as long as possible. BTW, polysporin is over the counter. It's like neosporin, but my dr. prefers this product instead.

My only complaint - the sutures are black. Since the strips are somewhat see-through, you can see this big black dot under the strip. Looks very nasty, like something's brewing under there. I'll let you all know what I look like underneath there, when the strips start to fall off. Hope this helps someone. The procedure cost $450. I have a laser scheduled for July.

Hi there, I am considering subcision from my derm in a couple of weeks. I can't miss very much work, so keep me posted as to how soon you can go out in public with make-up on. How long will the stitches be in your face for? Are you very swollen? I am real nervous about another invasive procedure...had full face laser 4 yrs. ago and it was pure he**.....anyway, I hope this works for you........sorry so many ???? cp

    CP727,

Hi, don't worry about the questions, I had plenty too. Well, the procedure was more nerve-racking than I thought. No, there was no pain. It was the fact that I couldn't open my eyes because the light was very bright and I couldn't see what they were doing. I've seen lasers done on TV, so I knew what to expect. I could here them snipping (the sutures) and making noise, but had no idea exactly what they were doing. I guess I'm one of those people who likes to know what's going on. I did get a briefing on what they were going to do, but I still wanted to *see* it. Other than my curiosity, it wasn't bad at all.

The sutures come out on Tuesday morning at 8am, so I can go to work directly after. I was under the impression that I could probably go out this weekend (don't know why I thought that), but I certainly can't. The band-aid strips fell off yesterday, and I have about 15 spots that have black stitches going through them. That's definitely something even *I* can't cover up! There is no swelling, just a slight soreness. It's not bad at all. I've had acne that hurt more (as I'm sure we all have). There's no redness either, right now. I think when the stitches come out, I'll have no problem covering the little marks, but I'll keep you posted. I bought a heavier-type of foundation just for this purpose.

    Thanks Sadkitty,

I'll keep everyone informed Hey, other than the black sutures, I look great. Can't they use some other less noticeable color than *black?* JK.

Hi, when I had subcission done they did not use sutures. It however, did sound like you had the same treatment done. The subcission works great, I think you will see great results.

    Merylynne (sp?)

It is too funny because when I had it done they only had black stitches too!! They apologized and said they ususally use clear ones, but like you I did not plan on going anywhere! I felt like a cat with whiskers!! LOL!

Take care, keep us posted after Tuesday's removal!

    AnnabelleC,

No sutures for you? Hm, I wonder why is it that you didn't need any and I did. Just curious. Glad you had good results, I'm hopeful too.

Re: I had the subcision/excision done today!

    Barbiedoll_fl,

I've only had the "fall out" stitches for any sort of medical procedure (wisdom teeth, etc...). These are really itchy because they feel like they're nylong or something. They're definitely not cloth.

Did you start to itch after a few days? I took at good look at them and the incisions are more irritated than before. I think it's because the knot in the suture was too tight against the skin. I took a pair of tweezers and gently moved the knot to the other side of the incision. Still really itchy, though.

    Thanks, M

Re: I had the subcision/excision done today!

    Ok, an update:

Well, I called my Dr.'s answering service on Saturday and she returned my phone call within 5 minutes. I told her I was red around the sutures and itching like crazy. She prescribed a topical antibiotic and I started using it that evening. Within minutes the itchiing went away, and by the next day, the redness greatly subsided around the sutures.

It's now Monday afternoon and they look great. There's no red at all. I'm thinking there may only be a little red dot where the suture enters the skin. No biggie. I've covered up much much worse.

Sutures come out tomorrow morning. Yeah! I've been wearing gauze and adhering it to my cheeks with some Johnson & Johnson medical tape. I've been doing a lot of housework/yardwork/painting, so I felt safer with some protection fromt dust and debris. I'll let you all know how I look tomorrow...

Yes, I experienced some itching as well, but it went away. As for the red dots left from the procedure, they went away really fast, they are nothing like the other red spots from old breakouts. Do not worry, you will love the results.

    Hi again

I noticed under your post it says NY.....do you live in the city? If you do, can you please tell me who your dermatologist is? I live in the city, and would prefer to see a female dermatologist if possible.

    Thanks

    Sadkitty,

I'm nowhere near the city. Western New York, actually. And my derm is male. Sorry!

Re: I had the subcision/excision done today!

    Update:

Okay, had follow up today. They removed the sutures. There was a little pinching b/c they had to pull the knot far enough out to get a small pair of scissors underneath to cut it.

The dr. said I took really good care of it, as there wasn't any crusting or redness. Granted, they were red after the pulling and snipping, but it faded. Nevertheless, they put more ointment on and adhered more of those little strips. They said to leave the strips on until they fall off by themselves.

And here's where I became a bad patient I had to work today, and I have a meeting. So when I got in my car, I pulled the strips off and started applying makeup. The spots were still red, and I'm sitting there thinking what a pain in the A$$ this whole thing was, and how I wouldn't do it again. But once the makeup was on, and the redness was covered....I am so smooth! I haven't had smooth cheeks like this since...I can't even remember! And they're probably not finished healing yet!

The bigger ones have a little line down the middle b/c of the incision. It's very minor, you have to look for it. The laser will also blast that away come July. I'm so happy with the outcome, I can't believe it. I spent most of the drive to work staring at myself in the mirror! I take back what I said earlier, about not ever wanting to do it again. I'd just have to take a week off, and maybe an extra day just in case.

I hope this helps someone. It was a very well spent $450!
