Accutane For Mild Acne

I just wanted to share my experience with acne. I had always suffered from what my doctor calls "mild acne" - to me it seemed disgusting and horrible and anythign but MILD. Anyway, I knew about Accutane and asked him if I could go on it. He said no, because I didn't have the "severe cystic acne" that it is generally reserved for.

So I spent like 3 years going through all these totally useless topical ointments, antibiotics and none of them worked for crap. Finally he agreed to prescribe me Accutane in a VERY small dose. I took like 1/5 the normal dose, or 10 mg a day, for 5 months.

Anyway, it cleared up every single pimple I had and I didn't get another one for an entire year. After that point my skin got moderately oily and I got a few small pimples now and then. Now I am back on it at 10 mg every OTHER day for three months.

Even though this drug has very serious potential side effects, which should not be taken lightly, for me, (and I know this sounds really shallow) life is miserable when you have acne, and it's worth the risk.

A few weeks ago, someone actually said to me, "you have great skin", totally out of the blue. I NEVER EVER thought I would hear that about myself. And if you had seen me before treatment, neither would you.

Anyway, that's my story!

Katie:

I have suffered from acne for almost 5 years now; it has gone from mild to moderate, cystic to severe, and back to moderate again. I am so frustrated with it and I feel like I have tried everything! I am considering going on accutane and after reading your post, I am considering it even more now! But my doc says my acne isn't bad enough to go on Accutane. I hate that because it still looks terrible and the whole situation still bothers me daily. I dont go a day without wishing I had clear skin. Thanks for your post.

A few questions I have, though... did you notice results right away on such a small dosage? Did you get any side effects? Thanks!

Accutane...

I took accutane when i had mild acne. IT works awsome, my skin is awsome! I recommend it ! It had no negative side effects other than dry skin and lips. No depression because that it not proven. No studies have proven it causes depression, plus your only on it for 5 or 6 months.

I say go for it

Re: Accutane For Mild Acne

I noticed results in about 2-3 weeks, even with this small amount. Since symptoms are dose-related, mine were mild to nonexistant. I had dry lips (easily remedied with vaseline) and a little bit of a sore back when going to bed, but that was very minor and it went away as soon as I stopped treatment.

I guess you just have to weigh the benefits/risks for yourself. I found out everything there was to know about the drug before going on it, and chose to do so anyway.

It changed my life.

Re: Accutane For Mild Acne

Katie, I have mild to moderate acne and will be given the prescription for accutane this Wednesday. My hesitation to take the drug is because of the "initial" outbreak. I will probably be put on a low dose like you were so should I not worry about it? Please get back to me as soon as possible. I have so many questions and I thought I was the only one with mild to moderate acne that was gonna go on accutane for it. Will I see results soon? Katie, please let me know what to expect.

Shelly,

I did get the initial breakout but for me it wasn't a big deal. The reason you get this isn't due to some reaction to the drug, it's your pores basically emptying themselves and cleaning out. So all the crap that was under the surface comes up and then it heals. You actually want this to happen because it means it's working.

For me, this wasn't a big deal. It wasn't like I couldn't leave the house or anything. I just put on some coverup here and there and it was fine. (Normally I don't wear any foundation or coverup, i don't need it now) The worse your acne problem, the worse the initial breakout, or so it seems from people i've talked to.

Re: Accutane For Mild Acne

I forgot to mention, I saw results pretty quickly. Everyone is different, but for me within the first month I saw an improvement, and by the end of the second it was much better. I remember by the end of my treatment I was so happy, a truly different person, that I didn't want to stop taking it. I would have nightmares about my acne coming back, but it never did.

Like I said, my skin did start to get oily again afer like a year, and now I'm back on it at a small dose.

I can't tell you what your reaction to it will be, but a vast majority of people who take it are completely and totally amazed. I never expected to have nice skin. I would have been happy with non-embarassing skin, you know?

Anyway, good luck!

Re: Accutane For Mild Acne

Thank you sooooo much! I also was wondering... I'm taking Doxycycline right now and have been for about 2 weeks. Should I stop this a good time in advance to the accuane or just keep taking until I get it? Do you think there will be a drug interaction and cause some kind of bad side effect? Thank you so much Katie for replying!

Katie, thank you sooo much for replying. I have another question though . I've been taking Doxycycline for about 2 weeks now and I was wondering if I should stop taking it a good time in advance before I start accutane. I'm worried about a drug interaction that can cause a bad side effect. Do you think I should stop taking it now and wait the three days til accutane? Thanks again for taking the time out to write back. I REALLY appreciate it!

Don't give up! I just finished my 2 1/2 weeks on Accutane. *40mg/day* I don't know that i am done with my initial breakout yet. My face was really bad about 3 days ago. I mean i had pimples everywhere nd i had never had pimples like this before. But now in those areas where the pimples were that is now mostly healing, my skin is smooth and for the most part not oily. I've never had skin so nice. Don't get me wrong i still have some big pimples left. But they seem to be healing as well. I hope all works out for you.

Re: Accutane For Mild Acne

I would stay on the doxy until you have your next appointment and speak to your doctor. I have no idea if there is an interaction, but I'm sure he or she will let you know.

The reason I say to stay on it is because getting on Accutane, especially if you are a girl, may take a while, like a couple of weeks. You have to sign all this paperwork, get on birth control and possibly even get a blood test. They are really strict about this.
So, I would say stay on what you have until

A. You find out if your dermatologist will prescribe Accutane to you and

B. You get all the necessary crap filled out and taken care of if he does prescribe it.

Good luck!

PS If he says no, try to insist. It took me a couple of YEARS to convince my doc. I hope you have better luck!

I just saw that it looks like he already agreed to prescribe it to you.

Still can't hurt to stay on the Doxy, if it's working at all. Didn't for me.

Thanks for replying Katie!!!!!!! Out of curiosity, how much did the accutane cost? At this point, money is no object, but I just want to know what to expect so I don't pass out when they charge me. Thank you Katie...again !!!!!!!!!

Shelly,

It's expensive, tho insurance will cover some if you have it. It's several hundred dollars for the whole course of treatment. You don't pay all at once, as they will only dispense it to you on a monthly basis. Depending on how many mg/day you get, it's in the neighborood of $200/month! (At least it was for me!)
