Post cleansers/toners - what's the dif?

neutragena pore refining cleanser and toner.. they both act as if they do the same thing, but are completely different in composition. what's the difference? is there a way to use both in succession for maximum benefits or something?

Cleanser clean the skin, remove makeup, etc. Toners remove any residual makeup or dirt and have an astringent effect which tightens pores. You should use both...cleansing and then toning.

Just be very, very careful with which toner you use. If it has witch hazel or alcohol, stay away from it. It will just irritate your skin more, and lead to more breakouts.

In my experience, I think it's best to avoid using toners. They are simply too drying and irritating for acne prone skin.

I also think toners cause breakouts. I think that when we have acne we try to get rid of all of the oil on the skin and we wind up hurting it more than helping it. It may be okay to use the neutrogena toner but either it will burn (ouch) or will feel like nothing and make the pores temporarily appear small which can be done with cold water. I choose cold water.

I use a toner each morning and evening and I've had no problems with dryness or breakouts.....as a matter of fact I love the toner I use. It's very gentle vitamin formula. The problem is that each person will react differently to each product...that's why it's so hard to recommend products to other people.

I wanna jump in here because I posted a while ago about the need for a toner or not and I did stop using it because of the responses I was getting here and at the advice of the Retin A people. I was getting very dry. WEll since I STOPPED using my toner, my skin continued to be dry, and it was blotchy and flaky. I found a toner that does NOT contain alcohol. It's Nivea Visage and it has chamomile and aloe in it. It has evened my skin texture out again and ithas helped with the dryness. So there you have it.
