Tips for keeping 9 yr old organized

My son has been having a lot of trouble keeping organized. He has add, his main problems have been focus. He looses his homework and other papers that he needs. I have tried to help him keep organized, but i'm not sure what to do,we got him his own desk so that his papers/homework could be kept in one spot and not mix with other papers, that hasn't helped at all. I try to remind him to put school papers in his backpack so that he remembers to take them back to school, that doesn't help. Any tips would be great.

Hi MandyAnne,

Sorry you haven't gotten an answer. I expect the majority of us with ADD kids struggle with this issue! All I've been able to figure out is that those backpacks must be monsters that *eat* homework!

When my most severly affected son was 9, I still had to look over his shoulder to be sure that homework got put in the backpack - reminding him just wasn't enough help. The other thing we did that helped was put a pocketed divider in the front of his binder that was only to be used for homework: if it was there when he came home, it was homework. If it was there when he got to school, it was to be turned in.

At that age, I tried to remember every weekend to help him go through his binder/backpack/desk and sort what to keep and what could be discarded.

As he's gotten older, he hasn't needed that much help (although organization is still an issue).
