    Can Concerta worsen ADD?

I began Concerta almost a week ago, and I upped the dose to 56mg a day because I need it to work - and work well - rather quickly (I just started a job).

I've noticed that I don't daydream as much, but I'm still forgetful, still vulnerable to distractions (though not as much, I think), and I cannot concentrate as I should be able to.

Yesterday, the second day on 56mg, I couldn't read as well - and by that I mean I would see the words, yet I would be unable to focus on them, as though I simply couldn't marshall my mind to concentrate. I'd scan over the text with unusual speed, and it'd take me a bit of willpower to actually slow down and read.

I know that some medications take a week or so to fully "mature" (and often even longer), but I've a sneaking suspicion that Concerta might be, well, making matters worse.

Has anyone experienced this or something similar? How long did Concerta take to become therapeutic for you?

By the way, I'm 19, and I'm just about 6'3" (if not there already) and 185 pounds or so. That might make a difference in how nicely the drug works for me, I suppose.

It sounds to me like your dose is too high. I would cut the dose in half and see what it does for you. It does not take time to build up like other meds.

If I cut the dose, won't the drug be less effective?

I took Concerta for a short time a few years ago. What I found for me was at 18mg I could focus and concentrate better. I was also more alert. (I have a tendency to be lathargic.) When I increased the dose to 36 mg my body was hyper but my mind was dull, tired, and blank. I was sleepy during the day at that dose but too stimulated to sleep-my body was hyper-alert. I realize that sounds contradictory. When you wrote that you read at unusual speed but were not able to concentrate on what you were reading, it reminded me of how I felt at a higher does. This was just my experiencel, but more is not always better. When you get too much of a stimulant it loses it theraputic benefits.

    I agree.

Going up to 56mg of Concerta in 1 week's time is an awful rapid increase in dose! Did your doctor actually prescribe it that?
