Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Well I figured things out myself...I have got down since Friday from 35mg a day everyday to as of yesterday 12.5mg over 24 hour period. Went 9 hours without anything last night until this morning..had hot flashes felt crappy have to work so I took 2.5mg this morning. I'll see how long that lasts today maybe I can start just taking the 2.5 every 6-7 hours but I 'll have to see. I have clients all day today and need to be on the ball. Feeling better about things. Today I would have been ordering more and I still have just enough to finish weaning I think. I might need just a few more not sure. I def. think I'm going to start only taking 2.5mg So goal today while working is 10mg over the course of 24hrs. I'll do that today and tomorrow and then cut another 2.5mg out ...If anyone has suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Dtrace your doing so well. Rule of thumb is to reduce at a 5-10% rate every 5 days or so but if you can tolerate a higher reduction rate that's always a good thing. If you can hang at 10mg per day and reduce that by 25% (2.5mg) as you intend to your doing so well. If you can stretch out the time in between doses that's a good way to reduce the amount you take. So if your taking 2.5mg every 6 hrs try to push it to 7-8 hrs between doses. That way your at 7.5mg per day in no time then push it to 2.5mg every 10-12 hrs and in no time you'll be at 5mg per day. I would think once your at 5mg per day you could jump right of to 0 very easily. You might feel slow and a bit crummy for a few days but it should pass fairly quickly.

It may be a few weeks before your sleep patterns return to pre oxy days but they will and it does take a few weeks to feel totally normal but it will. Remember it took awhile for your systems to get used to the oxy, it takes time, slower than you want, to get back to what your body was prior to oxy.

After a few go arounds I found life is so much better not on pain meds and all it's baggage such as taking them to fast or too soon, how to get more, keeping track of when to take them etc...

Keep up the good work. I sure do miss Ms Reachout she was the pillar and rock of this forum, her words were so helpful to so many!!!

Thanks so much for your reply..I have no one to talk about with this who would understand. It's now Thurs. and I honestly was down to 2.5 morning and 2.5 evening on Tues. Yesterday I took just 1/4 nothing all day but when I got done work on my feet all day my back hips legs felt horrible really was in pain..I took 2 Tylenol 3 and it helped but it also almost felt to strong didn't like the feeling. Then I wondered if this would set me back now that I know it's a milder opiate. I had 1/4 pill this morning at 5am and 1/4 just now..I'm feeling more crappy today really jumpy anxious feeling I don't like. Is this because of the tyneol yesterday? I saw my urine results online and it had my prescribed oxycodone but showed the tyenol codeine I had taken the Sat Sun before test and hydromorphone trace amount and morphine. I only took the oxy and the tyenol with codeine weekend before several times over the 2 days. Not sure why that would convert to all those meds?? I did not take the codeine directly with the oxycodone but took it in place of and in between when I didn't want to take more of the oxycodone. Now I realize that was probably not a good thing to do. Not sure what my GP will think when she sees that. I'm not getting anymore of it from her either way as I have made up my mind. I do not want to be a slave to the pills. I'm wondering if I should just get my tyenol prescription back and use it just on the days I'm having lots of pain. I took it on and off for years before she put me on the oxycodone. Not sure if this is a good idea or not. I still have low energy as well but really anxious that seems to be the worst. Thanks again...better days ahead I hope.

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

You're doing an awesome job Dtrace! Well done!

I went to detox to come off mine as I was taking huge amounts with a cocktail of xanax as well. They ran me dry for the first 4 days and withdrawals landed me in the hospital over night it was so bad.

After the dry out period I went on to suboxone, which I am currently weaning off now. So my story is a bit different from yours, but I wanted to add a couple of things.

If you can manage it, once you're off the oxy, try not to use other opiod meds as it's so super easy to fall back in to old habits without even realising it

Can you take something else for your pain? Are you able to go to a pain specialist/pain clinic? These have all helped me greatly even through 2nd degree burns I had no opiods It can be done.

you're doing so well! I look forward to hearing more on your journey!
DW.

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Thank-you for the encouraging words...Yes I am trying to take only advil ..I want to be careful right now. I did break and take the 2 tyenol 3 at 5pm (yesterday) as I said but it actually made feel yucky. So I won't do that again. I am very antsy fidgety and very dry mouth worse than when I was taking the pills..kinda strange. My hubby thinks I cut down to fast. I took a only the 1/4 pill this morning and at noon. Should I try to not take anything tonight or take half pill or a 1/4 not sure? I just feel so jumpy uncomfortable. Thanks again I really admire people like yourself that have the fortitude to get off these much higher amounts than myself. Not sure how you do it. I can barely stand this. ....

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Dtrace I found that once I decided to get off the pain med train I couldn't take any other opiate based med or Codeine. The antsy fidgety feelings will pass, oh how I hated those feelings. I used to take walks when I had those feelings. I remember how my legs and arms would be so restless, it was terrible, I would flap my arms around and around to tire them out, I'd take walk after walk around the block, all times of the day/night. Sometimes at 2-3am. That's when I'd take 10-12 10mg Norco's in the morning and at nighttime. Getting off OxyContin proved to be more challenging but yet I did and my life is so so much better and I was an old guy when I got away from pain meds. Now I'm really old haha but I'm old not sure if I'd be old if I stayed with my path of pain meds.

You really are doing so well your in the home stretch, be strong be focused and get to your goal. Seriously the worst part is usually over after the first 3 days totally off the pain meds. The antsy fidgety stuff takes a bit longer but that will pass. And yes you can manage life with pain without opiates, I know, I live on extra strength Tylenol and occasionally ibuprofen.

I'm basically very impatient and I'd taper and taper but I got to a point where I just was tired of always feeling lousy when tapering so I'd just stop and feel crummy for a few days. It's not that your sick as a dog tapering it's when your body thinks it's time for a pill you hold off and then your body aches and lurches a bit until finally you take a pill and wala All's good. That's why it's so friggin hard to stop taking the pills, it's like instant flu relief when you take a pill.

I can't emphasize enough how good my life is without pain pills and how much I missed while on them. The good thing is I can control and determine my future and life is so good without them even if I have pain. I found I can make it work.

Just keep up your good work it's about to get a whole lot more fun for you!!!

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Well I only have about 5 oxycodone 5mg pills left to taper with so soon I have to take the big plunge. So I'm trying to get right down to just the 1/4 pills 3 times over the day so that is not even a whole pill per day. Then quit on the weekend when I'm not working. ..Worse thing is waking early like 5am with hot flashes and fidgety I get up about 7:30am normally so this is abnormal for me to wake up and stay awake. It's a week of tapering and I've been on such a low dose you would think the hot flashes and fidgety anxious feeling would be over by now...not so. Thanks for your reply kudos to you for doing so well and sticking around to help others. Thanks!!

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Definitely jumping off on the weekend is best that way you won't have to worry about work. Yes the hot flashes and sleep issues, they go away, well the hot flashes go away fairly quickly the sleep is a more gradual return to normal. It is amazing that what's considered such a small amount of oxy can make you feel so lousy when quoting them. The good thing is the withdrawal is much easier than jumping off at a higher amount. Headaches, hot flashes, fidgety and anxiousness, sick stomach etc. the not fun part of stoping pain meds abruptly or a fast taper. I'd say your so darn close and you have just 5 pills left, stop them tonight and let the weekend help your through the worst part. You said your hubby has oxy for his issues, your going to have to be super vigilant to stay away from his pills. I have a world of experience so hang in there and keep asking questions if need be, I'm sure we have a thought, answer or opinion ha.

My only recommendation is have a clear goal, be determined and let nothing keep you from attaining your goal.

As a side note with the opiate epidemic our nation is experiencing now more than ever is a good time to get away from pain meds. The visibility opiates are receiving is increasiing at an exponential rate and Drs are under such extreme pressure from all levels of authority. The ability to get pain pills will continue be more and more difficult and being a slave to pain pills is so much trouble to manage so besides life being so awesome with out pills life is so much easier not having to worry and work so hard to manage and get pain pills. Hang in there it well get better.

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

I agree with everything you have said..I haven't even filled hubby's ..He's never taken it on any kind of a regular basis so it's no problem not to get them for awhile. He takes them for acute attacks of back pain sciatica. Thanks again.

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Thanks for asking...Nice of you to check up on me.
I'm doing ok yesterday seemed to be better than today for some reason. I am down to 1/4 3 times a day like 7am then 3pm 11pm...so it's really only 3/4 of a tablet all day. ..I had wicked hot flashes in the wee hours of the morning again. strange
I went and bought 5HTP suggested for the panicky anxiety feeling.
Also I seem to very congested in my sinuses (is this normal?) I'm using nose spray last night was really bad. I feel kinda a crappy I guess..LOL but I soon have to just stop taking it all together. Not sure if this will give me more symptoms or not?

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

Hey Dtrace, sounds like you're doing a great job! Unfortunately the flu like symptoms will be your body withdrawing, totally normal on this journey. I wasn't given anything in the Detox unit for my symptoms until commencing on Suboxone so I don't have any tips for that I'm sorry.

As for your hubby having a script, this is where you have to have very good willpower. My hubby has a full box, sitting in my kitchen, and soooo many times I have just thought "F it, I need this......" BUT I haven't touched them. I fought so so hard to get to where I am, including 2wks in facility, 300km away from my family.

Find something, anything, to hold on to that will help keep your willpower up You're doing great!

DW xx

Re: Almost tapered off my Oxyvcodone now

L-Tyrosene 500 mg x 3 or 4 a daywill take away that blah feeling.Don't take it if you're going to be in the sun; it will make your skin permanently splotchy. I had a lot of bad/weird dreams and couldn't sleep. It passed after a couple of weeks. My hardest time was first thing in the morning--I missed the way a percocet would wake me up, happy and full of energy. But it's better to focus on the positives. Make a list of why you want to quit and pick out the top 3 or 4. Review them all through the day. Keep your goal foremost in your mind. Your brain is going to fight with you because it's not getting that opiate fix. Your brain will start to make its own opiates soon if not already. You can do this once and for all. New give up, never look back.
