I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

I have been taking vicodin for a year due to gallstone pain. I have gotten the pain under control because I lost alot of weight and am now on a very low fat diet and excercise like crazy. These things have helped alot. However I am scared of the wd's that I am going to go through. I have been taking three vikes a day for about a year at 5-500. My doctor said that I will have some rough days ahead but in my case cold turkey is the best and just to tough it out.

How crummy am I going to feel and how long can I expect it to last for? Any thoughts would help.

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

I was addicted to a different drug, morphine, and at a much higher dosage but that doesn't sound right to me. I think anyone who hasn't been through this tends to dismiss the discomfort.

Plus the fact that everyone is different.

I'll let others weigh in on this but I wonder why CT. Why can't you taper off? Especially since your doctor seems to be supportive to a degree.

If I were you, I would have my gall bladder out also. I can't believe your dr. has not recommended this. It is a very simple procedure...I was up that afternoon. Those stones can get trapped in the ducts and cause major damage to the liver and pancreatis. This way, you will kill two birds with one stone...no pun intended.

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

Hi I had my gallbladder out almost 2 years ago because of gallstones,
well I got nerve damage from the surgery (darn surgeron) :-(
so I started taking ultram
for the pain. Well now I am on day 6 of withdrawal. I was taking
3 to 4 pills a day then I tapered down to 1/4 a pill a day, that took
me a couple of months to do.
Even tho that I was down to such a low dose, I am still feeling
horrible, right now most of the withdrawal symptoms are almost
gone, but the one thing that is really bothering me is the severe
nausea that I have. I went to a doctor and he prescribed me
"phenergan" for the nausea, but ofcourse that didn't help it
made my nausea much worse, go figure huh??
So right now I'm not taking anything, but I am thinking about getting
pepto bismol. haha I have seen alot of commercials about it,
so maybe it's a sign??
I really think tho that you should get your gallbladder taken out,
because it is not safe to have gallstones because your gallbladder
could burst, and I heard that there is a greater chance to get the
gallstones back if you don't get it taken out.
What happend to me from the surgery was tragic, and 1 out of a million
chances and I just had to be the one. :-(
And don't go cold turkey, try to taper down to the lowest dosage that
you can and then quit from there.
I know you can do it!! Kim

I would like to know why your Doctor prescribed Vicodin for Gallstones, instead of performing a very simple surgery. I suffered from Gallstones for sometime and I was never prescribed a addictive substance for the pain as it is not chronic. Have you had surgery?

Having said that, I congratulate you on your decision to stop the Vicodin. I can not tell you about the withdrawals from it, however I just wanted to give you some words of encouragement. I am a big fan, of C/T, because I believe that addiction is mostly behaviourial, and mental and that we need to feel the pain of addiction in it's raw form to benefit from it however, it doesn't mean that is for you. Have you discussed with a Doctor about tapering off it?

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

Thank you for your advice. Insofar as surgery goes the surgeon stated to me that most people have gallstones that raresly give them trouble after the first or second attack, (President Eisenhower had four of them when he passed and the stones are at a museum somewhere:) ) The surgeon told me that yes it can be a safe surgery but gallstones be controlled with diet and that they prefer to do that instead, unless the pain is not controllable. Evidently there are certain infections that can occur and become serious with surgery along with the possibility of liver tearing, I have a friend who almost died of that a year ago.

As far as the taper process goes my doctor gave me a way to taper down which consists of a period of three weeks, I am now down to 2 and a half a day now of 5-500 and next week I taper down to two and the following I go to one. I thought that going cold turkey would be best and just get it over with.

Thanks.

hey Ryan's dad.....i think you certainly sound strong enough to go the c/t route. Tapering is mainly when you are at high doses and want to come down slowly. And you are absolutely correct about "just wanting to get it over with." I have done it both ways and the tapering is just agonizing for me. On 3 pills a day you will feel minor w/d....grab some immodium, and something for sleep and some good books and movies....gatorade, Ensure milkshakes. You can do this, i can tell. Let us know what you decide. Hang in there....
luv,
LISA

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

I see where others have advised tapering off. But if you are truly addicted, I don't think "the tapering off" method is successful. Something happens during the day to upset you and boom, there goes the pills. One, two, three at a time. Atleast that was the way it was for me.

If the tapering off method isn't successful for you, try Suboxone. It is a non addictive alternative to detox. Only physicians trained in it can subscribe it. Most have never heard of it. Call around and find an addiction specialist. Ask about Suboxone. Find the doctor that can prescribe it. It works in the brain to block the "high" we get from pain pills. Research Suboxone on the internet. I am using it now, and it has saved my life. It helps with both physical and mental cravings.

It has been my experience that until I got rid of the problem causing the physical pain, I was unsuccessful in stopping pain meds. I went ahead with the neck surgery, got it fixed, and then went to an addiction specialist. Not pain center doctors. My doc is a psychiatrist.

I have 90 days clean now. I have never felt better. The natural energy level has come back. Some say I am even a little hyper. I have come across the pills recently and was truly able to reject them. Nothing I have ever been able to do before. The first time I saw them after 30 day rehab, I ate them. Now, the desire is no longer there for me.

This has just been my experience. Others of course have different experiences. Suboxone has been a life saver for me but like someone mentioned, everyone is different.

As far as what to expect detox wise: I felt like I had the worst flu in the world. I had absolutley no energy. I would roll out of bed and crawl to the bathroom when I had to go. Oh yeah! I had to go. The worse diarrhea! The pills slow down the digestive track and when the pills are abruptly stopped, the digestive system comes back with a vengence. And the worse was the lack of sleep. I couldn't sleep. But being this sick and knowing one little pill could ease all this was too hard for me to bear and I would ease right back into them and within a week was right back where I started. I repeated this cycle over and over and over and over and over..............

Good luck to you. Discuss with your doctor what is best for you. Be careful of other substances too. After coming clean off the hydrocodone, I became addicted to the sleeping medicine they gave me to help me sleep during detox. You may want to make sure any sleep meds they give you are non addictive. It is much easier to stop the monster before he starts.

Have your doc prescribe Suboxone or Buprenex to ease you out of the withdrawals that are likely to come. I had the most god-awful withdrawals that I could not stand it, and Buprenex injections completely took the withdrawals away.

Good luck,

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

Good for you, the biggest part of getting of the med wagon is determining in your mind that you need to quit to lead a healthy life.

After a failed back surgery I was taking vicodin, neurotin, percocet, and methadone. I felt so crappy that I worked hard just to get down to taking Vicodin. I am a police officer and I never had respect for addicts, I sort of thought of it as a weak personality trait, that is until I became dependent on pain meds myself.

Getting off of Vicodin can be very very challenging. My wife is a doctor and she had explained that in her experience tapering was the most effective. She is adamant that it was just her experience and not a fact and that everyone is different.

Anyway, 10-15 Percent decrease worked well for me. The good thing about Vicodin is that you can cut the tablets. instead of two tabs, take two halfs througout the day, then 1/4, 1/8...etc.

I quit cold turkey with the other meds and it screwed up my stomach, blood pressure, everything. Tapering for me seemed healthier, but was still a very big challenge.
Realistically, you can begin tapering, and if you feel good after dropping gradually, cut it cold.

Good luck.
Jason

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

Yes coming off of Vikes can be a major pain in the neck. Today was my first day without them and I don't feel horribly bad, partly because I managed the wd's with motrin. Although I am not so naive to believe that I do not have some rough days ahead. I am off of work till next Monday and I am going to take advantage of that. By the time I go back to work I will have been off of vicodin nine days, I probably won't feel completely back to normal but the worst should be over. The tapering process is just not for me, I have tried it before and it was a complete waste of time. In fact tapering can be almost a miserable as the wd's. I would prefer to get it over and done with.

Wish me luck.

You sound positive and motivated. Agree with you about the tapering.

I'll pray that your wd is much easier than mine. It probably should be given the much lower dosage.

Check in and tell us you're feeling. I personally am very curious about the wd process now since I'm going through it for the first time. It seems to me that people have different symptoms that bug them the most. It takes some people longer and others seem to get off relatively easy.

I'm just going by what I've read here.

Good for you!! Seems like you really want this, and you've "planned" well for it. (time off of work) I wish you the best....your life without the pills will be SO worth anything (including withdrawals) that you experience in the next week or so. Hang in there....Come here for support if and when you need it, there are lots of good, kind souls on this board. Just knowing you have a network of support can help. Stay strong...take it a day (or an hour) at a time..... Fondly ~ Jen

You can do this without the help of suboxene/subutex.I was at 30 to 35 hydro's a day and was addicted for about 3yrs and I was able to stop c/t.Taking only three a day isnt that bad and the w/d should not be as intense or last to long.Good Luck

Re: I am stopping vicodin starting tommorrow

Thanks for all the positive support.

The motrin does seem to help. I have some toast in the morning and then take 800 mg and that seems to help for about 3-4 hours. I felt pretty shakey this morning and like I had a bad case of the flu, it seems to decrease once I am up and walking around. I am prepared for some tough days. I am going to try and do some light excercise as I have heard this helps.

Good luck to all of those who wrote who said that they are attempting to quit. Its tough and not much fun but I have a feeling that once I am through this I will feel a whole lot better.
