MADOL HCL, a new anti-depressant? (news about a TRAMADOL HCL clone)

Tramadol HCL works on opioid receptors and serotonin along with a few other naturally occuring chemicals in the brain. Tramadol HCL mainly acts on the mu-opioid receptors. Scientists have come to the conclusion that Tramadol HCL would be a great anti-depressant if it's opioid action could be detached. Because it's action on serotonin is limited but very dense. They have succesfully taken the "narcotic" out of Tramadol HCL and created Madol HCL. As Madol HCL, it acts on serotonin and a few other chemicals in the brain, but not opioid receptors. This takes risk of addiction/abuse out of it, but still, as Madol HCL the drug is not effective for pain relief at all. This is very unfortunant, but - tests are underway to see if Madol HCL (made from Tramadol HCL) can be used for depression and anxiety.

    -Loss of sex drive
-Drowsiness (limited and increases with dosage)
    -Decrease in urination

So far it doesn't look good for Madol HCL, but the team is in high hopes for this 'anti-depressant'.

Tramadol HCL will still be used in it's original form for pain relief.
If Madol HCL is approved, it will be distributed under a seperate brand name from Ultram and will only be prescribed for depression.

Ultram (tramadol hcl) - for Pain relief
Vekra (madol hcl) - for Depression
