Unhappy Anyone stop taking Elavil cold turkey?

undefinedI was just wondering if anyone on here has ever been on Elavil and stopped taking it. Since taking this medicine I have put on nearly 20 pounds. I have not started eating more and if anything, my activity has increased. Every time I try to stop taking this medicine I get panicky, and extremely paranoid. Is it safe to go off of it cold turkey? My Dr. denies that this medicine is addictive at all. I feel severely bad if I even miss my dose!!! Please help!

Hi Golfinggirl Iwas on a very low dose of Elavil a long time ago for migrines. I just came right off it but like I said I was on a very low dose and probably on another antidepressant to boot. How much are you on? I don't know why if you're so uncomfortable the doctor wouldn't taper you off it. Let us know how you are doing Carly

Go to the depression thread for good info on anti-depressants. You should taper slowly off of any anti-depressant cuz if you cold turkey then your nervous system gets wacked out. Slow tapering is the way to go with these drugs. Ask in the depression board.

man! i have stopped taking elevil cold turkey & not because i wanted to! my ******* doctor decides to not refill my script after upping my dose for 2 yrs- I slept like a log and now i am in hell! i cannot sleep- and i am having withdrawals, i wish doctors had a little bit of concern for people - all they care about is screwing with people- and promoting drug companies- i hope my doctor gets some karma!

Re: Anyone stop taking Elavil cold turkey?

Hey Golfinggirl,

I have taken Elavil (Amitryptline) for over 20 years. You are not suppose to go cold turkey off of it. It can/will send you into a spiraling down depression and you won't be able to sleep. My children can tell if I miss a couple of doses. I tend to forget sometimes to call the doctor when I run out of refills. And you know it always happens on Friday night. My doctor and partners will not call in refills on the weekends or after hours. By Monday, I'm mean as a snake, can't stand myself.

It's not that is addictive like pain pills, etc. It's that you need this medication for whatever the reason your taking it. Talk to your doctor about changing to another anti-depressant. There a million goods one out there. Hope this helps and I'll post it on the other board also.
