suboxone and methadone-- I want off--- is it possible ever--- really?
I had a terrible illness that required me to be on pain meds for the last 5 years until I had my very intense surgery to cure it in Jan '07. Since then I had been with the same pain specialist who tapered me down from 240mg/day of methadone to 25mg/day which we approached just last month. Because I was reaching what he kept calling my "basement dose" based on the horrible withdrawal he observed, he referreed me to another doctor who he said has had great success treating patients with suboxone. I was hesitant and scared at first, but after reading all the success stories on the web and testimonials that it's better for your body than methadone and supposedly easier to taper off of, I thought what the heck, just get me off this methadone crap that had become the bane of my existence. Well, since being referred to my new doc (was induced onto suboxone in his office onto a dose of 12mg once daily), I've felt fine. No withdrawal. Definitely better than the methadone. My new doc is very pleased that I didn't need more than 12mg so that made me feel good. I just don't know how to feel about it because it is a new drug and I haven't heard much about it other than just what I read. I also have been taking 6 mg/day of xanax (1 2mg tab 3x/day) to help cope with withdrawal (I have generalized anxiety disorder not associated with my prior illness) for the last 6 months. My goal is to get off of everything. It's daunting in my head but when I look at the progress I've made getting down off the highest dose of 240mg of methadone to where I am now... it has me encouraged. I could really use some advice, shared experiences similar to mine or just opinions from some objective people. Thanks to anyone who cares to respond!
