Day 4 of cold turkey from oxycodone and oxycontin question

I was rear-ended on 3 separate occasions in a 5-week period almost 4 years ago. All 3 times, I was stopped at a red light. The first was the one that caused all of my pain, due to the way my neck was turned, looking for oncoming traffic. The 2nd person did not have insurance and the 3rd person was too terrified to even get out of her car because I was standing at her window, screaming at her (I had just gotten my car repaired and out of the shop the day before and she didn't even scratch the paint - still, I was infuriated.)

Anyway, 6 months (I think) of treatments on the dreaded DRX9000 and I felt better. About 9 months later, the pain flared up again (my discs C6 & C7 are now herniated instead of compressed and I've developed degenerative arthritis in my upper back) and my PCP started prescribing me Lortabs (7.5/500), but when I got over the 3 a day she wanted me to take, she sent me to a pain specialist. He allowed me 5 a day of the same thing and within a year, I was up to 10mg/500, 5 times a day. Then, he changed me to Percocet (Oxycodone) 10mg/325's and NO MORE than 6 a day. When 6 a day was not enough, he added Oxycontin 20mg to my mix, but did not explain to me that OC's are not an "as needed" pain reliever and that they are "time released". It got to the point where when I ran out of my Oxycodone, I would double up on Oxycontin, taking 6 a day instead of my 3 a day he allowed. Therefore, I always had one or the other, not both together, as prescribed. My last bottle of Oxycodone (120 count), I blew through in 7 days - yep, more than 17 a day. That was my wake-up call. My PM doc had also never told me that 75% of the pain I feel that first day without my pills (when I'd run out early) was withdrawal pain. I had never had to go more than a day before he'd write me another script.

Even though I filled my oxycontin script yesterday morning, I'm on day 4 of no pain meds at all. They're just put away "just in case". Day 1 was the worst, Day 2, I got by on Aleve until I decided having a bloody mary seemed like a good idea - wrong! Just made me feel run down and tired. The diarrhea, stomach cramps, sweating, restless legs and sleepless nights are really dragging me down, so here's my question: with as much determination as I have for quitting these, and the fact that I am so angry at my doctor for lying to me (well, not disclosing things I should know, really), does anyone think it would be ok for me to take just 1 of the oc's to help ease the withdrawal pain? I've had such a miserable weekend and I need a decent night's sleep because I have work tomorrow. Any advice would be helpful.

If you are really intent on stopping the meds the safest way to do it is to taper off of them slowly, not just stop them cold turkey. By tapering down slowly you give your body a chance to get used to working without the narcotics. It's been used to having them for quite a while, it will take a while for it to get used to them not being there. By tapering you also lessen the withdrawal symptoms when you finally get down to a low enough dose that you can stop.

There are several things you can do to help ease the withdrawal symptoms, iImmodium for the diarrhea, nibbling on crackers or dry cereal throughout the day for the nausea, Melatonin, Valerian Root or Benadryl for the insomnia, Vitamin B12 for the lack of energy, Ibuprofen or Aleive and very hot baths for the severe body aches and pain.

Since you've been off the meds for a few days, if you take an Oxy now, it will most likely increase the urges for the drug severely. Also, as you now know, Oxycontin is not an instant release med, so it will take some time to relieve the symptoms your already having.

    Take care,

    Kat

Thanks, Kat and Bolter, for your replies. I did not take one while waiting for a reply, either, I'm proud to say - now 5 days without pain meds (other than OTC). I saw my PCP today and she is so proud of me and just blown away that I did this all on my own. I'm kind of ashamed I let it get so far, but day by day, I'm feeling better physically, therefore feeling better about me. I wouldn't be where I am if not simply for Epsom Salt hot baths - they do WONDERS to ease the aches and pains and relax me. I even came home from work today on my lunch hour and took a quick 15 minute one - helped a lot. Today I'm not feeling too much actual "Pain", I just feel like my skin is crawling and I have zip/zero energy. I know that will lesson with time from what I've read here. Thanks again for your support.

Sounds like your plan is working and your doing great. Just keep doing what your doing and you'll have this kicked in no time.

Does your PCP have a plan to treat your underlying pain with other alternatives?

Re: Day 4 of cold turkey from oxycodone and oxycontin question

I am keeping my Salsalate 500 mg (anti-inflammatory, non-narcotic) and my Zanaflex (4 mg - I don't even take the 3 doses I'm allowed daily on these, some days, don't take them at all) and she is comfortable managing those for me.

Sorry it's been so long since my last post, but I've been busy...well, living my life! It's now day 14 for me and, yes, my neck and back hurt, but not enough to warrant taking prescription pain medication. I do just fine with Aleve, plain old aspirin or ibuprofen - and one hot bath in the evening. I've also discovered Dr. Teal's epsom salts (wonderful scents) and have discovered something that I used to laugh at, actually works wonders: aromatherapy. I'm also looking into what it will take to get something from my doc saying a hot tub would be very beneficial to me so I can write it off on my taxes.

Thanks for the encouragement and great advice - still can't believe I actually did this!
