Do you take your morning cortef between 6-8 am?

I was just wondering if it matters what time you take your cortef in the morning. Since the normal cortisol rhythm has the highest level of the day between 6-8 am, do you take your cortef then? What if you don't get up until 9 am or so? I thought about taking cortef when I wake up to go to the bathroom, but since it says to take with food, I don't take it then. I take my thyroid hormone without any food for better absorption, but I wait until I get up, usually after 9, to take the cortef with my breakfast. If I take it at 9 or even as late as 10 a.m, will that make much difference? (Can you tell how I don't like mornings? It is so hard to get up and feel well then.) Currently, I only take 5 mg cortef in the morning and none the rest of the day (although I don't feel any benefits yet after a week). I was just wondering how the rest of you took your cortef.

By the way, I do not have Addison's disease (yet anyway). My doctor just said my adrenals were "burnt out" and my cortisol is low.

I take my Cortef whenever I get up. This is usually between 8 and 9 a.m., but occasionally I have slept later and haven't taken my morning dose until after 10. I have had no ill effects from this, but you should ask your doctor for advice. You are getting by on an amazingly low dose of Cortef, so your adrenals must be putting out something.

I take my first 5mg of hydrocortisone about 6 a.m. while still in bed with no food, but lots of water. I take my thyroid med at 5 a.m.

Perhaps you would feel better in the morning if you took your 5mg allot earlier, but an hour away from the thyroid med.

For those of us with addisons it does matter when we take our meds. A normal person starts releasing cortisol in the "wee" hours of the morning. That is why it is good to take a bit of it early. Also helps us get up without that hang over feeling.

Did you have more than one doc check your adrenals? It is risky to take steriods without a diagnosis of addisons.

    gettin better,
Do you have addison's and not take your cortef until after 8 or 9? Wanda thought it was better to take it earlier. As far as the 5 mg, the only thing I have noticed is that I seem to sleep deeper, but I am still very tired all the time. I can't seem to do much of anything without getting so worn out.

    Wanda,
I think I should probably have an ACTH stim test, but I have no insurance and very little money. The only thing I have had done is a saliva test 4x during the day. The results showed "adrenal fatigue", meaning I am still putting out some cortisol, but not enough to be in the normal range. It also showed that I have a backed up supply of progesterone which is not turning into cortisol. Anyway, that test seemed sufficient for my doctor to give me cortisol. I have noticed that most people with "adrenal fatigue" take more cortisol than that, though. I think my doctor wants to be cautious.

Yes, I have secondary Addison's due to a pituitary problem, and I never take my Cortef before 8:30 or 9. It seems to work fine, and my endo is happy with my numbers. It works for me.
