mom has addisons
My mother was diagnosed with addisons 3 years ago. She has been treated, but has improved little. She seams to have declined in the past few months. she is under the care of physicians as well.

She fell and broke her hip. She had surgery, entered a rehab nursing facility, did or I should say struggled with therapy for the first 6 weeks. They took her off therapy and classified her as non rehab-able. she is now a permanent resident at the nursing home. she has declined in health every day. she is too weak to get out of bed. she stopped eating, and has since gotten pneumonia. No doctor has seen her, but checked a chart and prescribed her antibiotics for the pneumonia. She is dying slowly and painfully. Should we request her be brought to the ER? The doctor for the nursing facility is aware of her addisons.

My mother has given up and is very tired. What do I do?

Re: mom has addisons
I have addisons also and have had some serious health problems. You might need to ask for a specialist (endocrinologist) and see if her cortisone might need bumped up for a little while. There are some great sites that talk about stress doses in situations and how much, how long, etc. If my cortisone is too low I feel washed out and I feel like I am just fading away. This is hard to explain but I bet your Mom knows exactly how I feel! Please talk to her doctor or specialist and see if this might help her. God bless.

Re: mom has addisons
I agree with previous post. She may be on inadequate treatment for her Addison's, and doses are usually increased increased for things like surgeries and serious illnesses like pneumonia. These are events that are very hard for the elderly to overcome, but especially if their cortisol levels are too low. I would get an endocrine consult ASAP, even if you have to take her there from the home, as many Drs do not see patients in nursing homes. You could talk to the endo first and have your Mom get labs drawn in the home, so results are available for the endo visit. It will save time and get her on proper doses quicker.
